A local news station here in Milwaukee

A WDJT (Channel 58) news truck is nearly submerged in water after breaking through the ice on Big Lake Muskego this afternoon.

The truck drove off a boat launch and about 150 yards out onto an iced over channel leading to the lake when the ice suddenly gave way, said Muskego police Sgt. John Mesich.

The truck quickly sank to the bottom of the channel, which is about 4 to 5 feet deep, Mesich said.

The occupants of the truck were able to escape without injury and the truck now sits partially submerged in the channel, Mesich said.

A special company has been called to help pull the truck from the ice, but that could take two days, Mesich said.
Mesich said that the crew was shooting "something ice-related."

I was just watching the other local news stations, who are obviously making fun with this story. Apparently the driver had mistaken a boat launch for a road.

Article Here

It happened as a news crew for CBS 58 (WDJT) was working on a story about ice safety.

WDJT did not want to comment on the incident

LMAO, no kidding. Why would they?

Temperatures were expected to plunge below zero Sunday night into Monday morning. That makes it even tougher because the truck will be encased in fresh ice.

It just keeps getting better LOL 8)

Lots of nice expensive electronics in that truck.
Well, I guess they are cheap electronics now, after being submerged and frozen in ice.

I wonder if their insurance will cover it, since they were not operating on a road at the time?

Anybody ever buy a submerged news truck before? The asking price is pretty reasonable. 8)

I thought it was a very effective story on ice safety. Strong work!

That would be a great "spin" on the whole mess. They might just be able to pull it off and be heroes.

A WDJT-TV (Channel 58) engineer told Muskego police that the loss of the live transmitting van that broke through an iced-over channel on Big Muskego Lake would be up to $250,000.

Crews chipped away ice Monday from the submerged news van, which broke into the channel while the station was preparing a segment on ice safety.

Chief Engineer Dan Dyer said Monday the station will not comment on the incident, but the station issued a statement on its Web site.

Dyer estimated the loss of the live transmitting van to be between $200,000 and $250,000, according to police.

Kem Water Recovery of Muskego dug out a 7-foot wide and 150-yard long trench so a large tow truck could drag the 5,000-pound van back out of the water.

The van went into the channel at about 4:15 p.m., Sunday but the sub-zero temperatures overnight caused the water to freeze around and inside the van, making the job more difficult.

The driver, Susan Wronsky, 27, told police that she thought she was still on the road when the ice gave way and the van went down into five feet of water and muck, Lt. John LaTour said. She passed the pier and boat launch off of Durham Drive and traveled 150 yards on the channel. She escaped without injury.

That is latest as of this morning....

So........I wonder if she keeps her job after losing $250,000 worth of equipment?

Anyone surprised the driver was female? :$ I hope LF doesnt read that. 8)

I can see the conversation between her and her supervisor: 8)
Susan: well I thought it was the road. :'(
Supervisor: well you thought WRONG, Wronsky! :|

Let me get this straight. Lakes get ice on them? ;) Must be a Wisconsin thing. Did she have her cheese life vest on?
I'm so glad to be from Wisconsin. Far far away from Wisconsin.8)

Could have been awful. I'm surprised that it was only 5 feet deep 150 yards from shore.

It was just a channel leading to the lake itself. Actually today they are saying that the van is buried in 2 to 3 feet of silt. Man I would NOT want to be on the vehicle recovery team. The temps have gotten beow zero at night here, so whatever ice they do clear away is just refreezing.

The only problem is that the other stations got the scoop.
