Re: WalMart.....Worried? Mmmmmm

This just in.<br /><br />ASHLAND A new Wal-Mart Supercenter that is anchoring the $30 million development on Melody Mountain will open Aug. 24, a store official said Wednesday.<br /><br />Store manager Harold Terry said the Wal-Mart store that has occupied the Ashland Town Center since the mall opened in 1989 will close at 6 p.m. Tuesday night, and the new store will have a grand-opening ceremony Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m. The supercenter will then open to the public at 8 a.m., Terry said.<br /><br />"I think people will walk in still thinking of the old store in their minds," Terry said. "But when they see the inside of this store, they'll see the present and the future of shopping in this area."<br /><br />The new Wal-Mart store is twice the size of the mall location, and will be the first store to open in a new retail development that will include four new restaurants and another large retailer.<br /><br />"Everything is going well," Terry said of the transition from the mall up the hill to Melody Mountain. "We're just trying to get this store open, and so far things have been smooth. We should be right on target." <br /><br />Home Depot, long-rumored to be part of the Melody Mountain site, had committed to locate adjacent to Wal-Mart in January, but backed out of the development in June.<br /><br />However, RG Properties, which developed the site, said other large retailers are interested in the location.<br /><br />Of the four restaurants, three have been named: Outback Steakhouse, O'Charley's and Fire Mountain, a buffet-style steakhouse.<br /><br />Outback has announced an opening date of Sept. 19. Officials with the restaurant said the new eatery will provide about 100 jobs.<br /><br />Opening dates for the other eateries have yet to be announced.<br /><br />As for the Town Center, mall manager Merri Hurn said the shopping center doesn't yet have anything to announce in terms of replacing Wal-Mart. She said Glimcher Properties, which owns the mall, is still in the process of terminating Wal-Mart's lease, and negotiating with new potential tenants.<br /><br />"We've worked with several different retailers, but there's nothing we can say at this point," she said.<br /><br />The Wal-Mart site will likely remain vacant for the rest of the year, she said.<br /><br />"We're looking at something in 2006, probably not 2005," Hurn said.<br /><br />Hurn said one possibility for the Town Center is to re-design Wal-Mart's portion of the mall, opening it up to more than one store.<br /><br />"We're thinking of renovating it so whatever comes in there wouldn't necessarily have to be a huge box-type retailer," Hurn said.

tommays,<br /><br />What is "lame health insurance"?<br /><br />And, by the way, when did that become a right?<br /><br />I'm reading my pocket copy of the constitution now and I can't find it. Please advise.

I don't really have a problem with Wal Mart, like I said, I support Capitalism, let them run their business and make money as they see fit as long as it's legal. I DO have a problem with them trying to strong-arm their way in. They wanted to build in Westerville but Westerville said thanks but no, we don't need you, go somewhere else. Wal Mart then sued the city trying to force them to allow the construction of the site. That's the type of tactic that I hate and that's one of the reasons why I won't take my business to Wal Mart.

Each development case has its own merits and downsides.<br /><br />If a community does not want something, that is their perogative. AS LONG AS politicians are actually representing the will of the residents.<br /><br />In many cases, that IS NOT so.

DJ, this wasn't an instance of politicians getting in the way. Trust me, the City Council would have loved the extra tax money. It was the citizens who said no. It was a simple matter of fact that Westerville is a small, historical town and we didn't want or need a Wal Mart. It was when Wal Mart filed the lawsuit that my opinion turned sour. That was really bad PR move on their part.

Bravo.<br /><br />I do not agree with WM taking y'all to task. But, they are not stupid. There may be underlying issues/promises made. As said, WM is the the most savvy retailer on the planet. I hope you're 100% right, but I smell something.<br /><br />Be careful; who(m) you vote for.<br /><br />Be well.

Walmart does have very innovative thinking. One that strikes me closely is right here in College Station Texas. Seems our property taxes are based on real property. Well Walmart has figured out how to avoid paying some property taxes by using drop off trailers to store there back log of products. At one point last year there were 24 10X40 storage trailers at the store for over one month. Multiply that out and see how good a business neighbor they are!!

DJ<br /><br />lame insurance is coverage you provide that your FULL TIME work force cant afford <br /><br />so when you cant pay your hospital bill who do think picks it up LOCAL GOVERMENT which is then giveing walmart a handout<br /><br />States Are Battling Against Wal-Mart Over Health Care<br /><br />its not my opinion but a matter of fact just do a google <br /><br /> soon in NY ALL BOX STORES will be required to provide better basic health care <br /><br />you cant suck huge amounts of money out of a local economy and put nothing back with out getting a backlash at some point <br /><br />in NY that point is right NOW<br /><br /><br />tommays

tommays,<br /><br />The LEAST of my worries is health insurance.<br /><br />Illegal aliens get it. Why can't I? <br /><br />Just "show up" at an emergency room. They CANNOT deny you. You might have to wait, but you'll get it.<br /><br />So, what's the problem? Convenience? That is a "non argument" with current conditions, in my book.

Yea and the hospitals have forms that you can sign where you don't have to pay anything either, so the health insurance thing is a cop-out, IMO.<br /><br />They don't advertise it, but they have it.

The dirty little secret about "free" health care is that "somebody" pays.<br /><br />You, your neighbor, your freind, your boss.<br /><br />BIG emphasis on YOU!<br /><br />SOMEBODY pays. There is NO such thing as FREE.

DJ, Wal Mart spoke for themselves when they decided that they knew better than Westerville and filed the lawsuit. You're good in my book, peace, DJ.

WHO said anything about free health care<br /><br />walmarts rival like costo charges a low end worker about 8% of salary for health care<br /><br />walmart charges the same worker about 33% a bit tough so they go with out<br /><br /><br />way back when when companys were allowed to incorporate and get all the protections and benefits of this Privilege, they were supposed to be giveing something back like takeing good care of there work force.<br /><br />over the years it has turned into a tool to allow many of them to take as much as they can and give back as close to nothing as they can<br /><br />tommays

nsurer wants woman's crash settlement<br />By Robert Patrick<br />Of the Post-Dispatch<br />08/15/2005<br /><br />Debbie Shank visits with director of nursing Ricki Scott.<br />(ROBERT COHEN/P-D)<br /><br />Debbie Shank stocked shelves at a Wal-Mart store in Cape Girardeau, Mo., until five years ago, when her minivan was hit by a tractor-trailer. Her Wal-Mart health insurance paid the medical bills. Proceeds from a lawsuit helped finance her care in a nursing home.<br /><br />Brain damage forces her to use a wheelchair and limits her upper body movement to one arm and two fingers. It stole her memory and her ability to talk to her husband and three sons.<br /><br />"She'll ask about the boys, she'll ask about the cat," said her husband, Jim Shank. "Whenever I'm there, she thinks it must be a mealtime. We don't really hold a conversation."<br /><br />Now the Shanks face a new obstacle. Her Wal-Mart health insurance plan wants the lawsuit money to repay its costs.

Re: WalMart.....Worried? Mmmmmm

Which small business in competition with Walmart paid better than Walmart, offered better health coverage than Walmart, employed more people than Walmart, offered better career opportunities than Walmart, or enhanced nearby property values more than Walmart? Capitalism and free enterprise are fine until someone comes along and does it better than the others and then "it's not fair". Companies moving south to get away from confiscatory taxes and labor unions always get tax breaks and other relocation incentives that competing communities offer, not just Walmart. Fugitives moving south in flocks from the rust belt are driving up housing prices, forcing up local taxes for services they demand, overloading schools and destroying the civility around boat launch areas. I wish they would just stay home! Passing legislation in New York to require Walmart to offer better health care. You have got to be kidding! Obviously, all the Hillarys and Gerald Nadlers aren't in Washington yet.

The company pursuing the accident victim that Treedancer described as being pursued by the Wallmart Health Plan for repayment, could have been more accurately identified as the "Underwriter" of the Walmart Health Plan rather than the Wallmart Health Plan. Where is the fairness?

Wallmart is the reason gas prices are so high. If you took everything made in China out of a wallmart store, it would look like the last two days of a goiing out of business sale. CHINA'S demand for oil to make products for wallmart is the demand side of the supply and demand that drives up oil prices.
