The 3.0L V6 on the '05 6 is of Ford design and does run very well, so far so good.

I noticed mention of Ford Fusion. The Fusion is based on the Mazda 6 platform with slight differences, so I'm not surprised with the positive comments on the Fusion.

My '12 Fusion with the 3.0 V6 friggin' hauls!

The 2.5L V6 in the 1999 626 has been a great motor (they used it in the Millenia too, didn't they?), one of the few stock V6's that I know of that redlines at 7,000 rpm.

Yes, they used the 2.5L KL in the standard Millenia. The Millenia S used the 2.3L KJ Millercycle which was similar to the KL, except for the Lysholm compressor and intercoolers on the top. Made allot of power for the time, but MAN was it a BIG PITA when it broke (which was often). They also had a 1.8L V6 based off of the KL they used in the MX-3.

Early Fusions were direct decedents of the 6's G platform. As I understand it, Ford and Mazda have gone their separate ways with the design.
Also interesting to note, the original 3 (started in '04) used a Volvo S40 chassis. Ford also used the same chassis at the time for the European sold Focus, but the North American Focus at the time still retained it's original chassis.

Definitely stay away from the Cobalt. What is your budget? A lot of responses suggest new or nearly-new vehicles, but if the Cobalt is on your list, I have a feeling you're planning on spending fewer bucks.
