Re: Want to change to electronic ignition

Basically the overstroke switch is a nomally closed switch that opens up when the shift cable goes all the way into gear. This prevents the ESA from operating when you are finally all the way into gear. As you pull out of gear, the overstrike closes and the interrupt switch will also close momentarily to provide the spark interrupt. You need the overstroke switch when you have a sticky shift cable which causes the interrupt switch to always try to stumble the engine. The overstroke switch is your "backup" to disengage the ESA when you are fully into gear. Newer ESAs don't use the overstroke switch and rely on a timer that only stumples the engine when the interrupt switch first closes. If the interrupt switch remains closed after you shift, it only allows the stumble to occur for a few seconds.

ESA stands for electronic shift assist. When the ESA is engaged, it pulses the negative side of the coil to ground at a 50% duty rate which effectively turns off half of your cylinders.

If you go up to the adult section, you can get the wiring diagram for the OMC and the plug that goes to the switches are shown on it. With an ohm meter, you can also pretty much determine what connections you would need to use if you switched to the Delco unit.

The kit that rodbolt refers to includes the distributor itself plus the wires, coil and somme wiring.

not all the OMC cobras had the overstroke switchs. thats why <i said if applicable.
mercruiser used the EST in several applications and its a simple matter of shifting some wires to use the OMC inturrupt switch and the EST ign system.
you can also look for a prestolite BID system.
