As some of u may know i recently got a 1970 25hp Evinrude,, the long shaft is not going to cut it on my jon boat , so my first ? is this ,,,,is this advice correct on getting a sortshaft driveshaft.....?

According to my Johnson 'common parts' book, the same driveshaft was used on Johnson 18,20,25- hp motors from 1956 up thru at least 1975 (pub date of the book). I believe all those interchange with Evinrudes

my 2nd ? can the lower shifter rod be cut to work , it seems like it could be , after grinding a lil groove in it?

Also i pulled my leg previously but dont know the lenght of my driveshaft, I think I need 5 inches shorter for the shortshaft, driveshaft right?, Please does anyone know the length of the short shaft I need? Any help would be great for that lenght when im shopping ebay or AOMCI so i could confirm with the buyer ...Thank U model # 25002E

Confirmed, same shaft for 15,18,20,25hp 1955-76 (date of my book). Also same shaft for 10hp 1956-57 (not '58-up). There are tons of those motors out there. Shouldn't be hard to find a used shaft. Go to aomci.org and place a free want ad on their Webvertize classified ads page. It'll be cheaper than e-bay.

Sorry, I don't know the measurement

Yes, you can cut 5" off the shift rod and water tube. I use a chainsaw file to cut a new groove in it. Be sure the groove is exactly 5 inches down from the original. Don't bother trying to get the groove all the way around, just one side for the connector screw is OK.

Cutting the copper water tube down is not big deal because it is easily replaced. I would think twice about cutting the shift rod though. Since you are going to have to locate a short drivehsaft anyway, why not try to locate the shift rod to go with it. As FR says, if you cut the shift rod the location of the detent has to be exactly in the right location - it doesn't have to be off by much to cause problems.

Another option is, as TD says, a transom extension.

Re: Want to go long to short shaft???s

I am doing the same thing to a 79 25HP. what I did is pull everything a part. I purchased a short shaft off ebay for 125$. I thought it was kinda steep but talking with some salvage yards (which did not have)the price was fair. New they were $200 and the ebay seller want $200 for used . I offered 125 and he accepted. They only made my 14 spline draive shaft a few years. I got the spacer tube off ebay also. Its important to know the part numbers you need. Do this by going to ishopmarine.com and typing in your model #. I am not sure if the lists goes back to 1970. Then remember to access the short shaft model numbers for the correct parts. They have every part with diagrams you could ever need. Jot them down or print and ebay away first then what you cant find use ishopmarine. I have seen some drive shafts for as little as 35$ on ebay. If you plan on trying to match with another year or HP make sure you know the shaft diameter and spline count. A lot of these lower units for sale on ebay will bolt up except for the drive shaft so buyer beware. I found a lot of lower unit that would bolt up to my engine but the shaft was different. I plan on ebaying what I took off as a kit, shaft, extension, etc to recoup some $.

As far as putting all back together I am sure I will be on this forum with a few questions. I am having fun tho. Makes the winter easier to take

Don't think there is anything to the water tube. I went long to short on my '71 ev. 40 and the water tube had an extension on it that I just pulled off. Slip fit.
