Want to know that it starts...

I have a 1978 Johnson 25hp, and I want to be sure it will start before going to the lake. I have a motorflush do-hickey and it does fit over the lower unit, and it does cover the water inlets. However, where it sits, it covers up the holes with the suction part. Is this exceptable, and can I attempt to start it up in this situation? If not, any other suggestions other than a big garbage can?

As always, thanks for the advice!

NO, you cannot run that motor on "muffs". The main water intake is a screen on the leading edge of the exhaust snout above and aft of the propeller. Those little holes on the side are just for when running in reverse and the prop is sucking the water away from the main inlet. Any water you manage to get in there will merely run out the main inlet screen.

Use a big garbage can and make sure the motor is deep enough in it to well submerge the water pump before starting. The pump is in the first bulge above the flat anti-cavitation plate.
