Like the title says, I want to rig up my 402 with a power trim system. I want to see if anyone has custom fab'd any brackets/mounting hardware to hook up a different year model tilt/trim unit to an older motor. These things look pretty similar, and I'm just thinking it wouldn't be too hard to weld up some brackets and bolt it up. I have access to all the good stuff (mig and tig welders, band saw, plasma cutter, oxyfuel rig...) so tools aren't an issue. I just wanted to see if anyone has done it before. Thanks.

I have a 79 40 HP AKA in 78 as a 402. Someone bought me a parts engine 1997 40 HP 4 cyl 4 stroke with the Power tilt on it. Wouldn,t you know it I stripped most of the electrical from it but I didn,t get the unit ( it got scraped). I wish I had. I get stuck alot out in the inland waterway in FL. Lifting that engine all the time stinks. I also thought about transfering the Unit to my 40 2 cyl. I thought it would work. As long as the distance of the swing arm steering rod is the same as the unit (if you have the entire unit and not just the tilt, meaning the transome brackets that attach to the steering shaft ofthe swing arm) it should just bolt onto the 402. This depends on the size of the motor the unit came off of:confused:

One more issue you may have is the steering cable If you have a single steering cable I believe they sell an extention for the cable to protrude outward to limit binding on the steering from the boat to the steering shaft on the engine. You may need a special steering link as well. For dual cable you may already have this adapter on the 402

Do you use one of the garelick (or similar) motor lifters? I wonder how much easier they make lifting the motor?

I've even seen/heard of a few people using johnson and evinrude tilt trim setups on mercury motors. There is also a guy down the street with a little bass tracker with an older Tracker 40 or 50 motor with power tilt. I should just go steal his haha
