Hi, I just picked up a Wards Sea King 6hp outboard. It appears in great shape, but I know nothing about it.

I did a search on Iboats, and found out it is a 1966 model, but that's it.

Here are the numbers: Model# VWB19074A. Serial# 66X 10850.

What is the fuel/oil mixture?

Who manufactured it?

Any quirks I need to know about?

Are parts/manual still available?

I would appreciate any and all info!

Thanks,
-Spiker

Re: Wards Sea King 6hp Questions

That was made by West Bend which became Chrysler in 1966 (with no changes in the line-up) which became Force. Few parts are going to be available beyond plugs, points, and condensers. You can probably run 50:1, but to be safe I'd suggest 32:1. You might be able to find an old-model-year service manual in your public library. Information for a 6Hp West Bend or Chrysler would apply.

Re: Wards Sea King 6hp Questions

It appears the 6 - 9 hp West Bend/Chrysler motors
are pretty similar with the bore and stroke being
the main difference. 6 being 2" X 1 11/16.
larger motors 2 1/8 X 1 11/16.
6hp @ 4,000 rpm,H8J plugs @ .030.
point gap @ .020.My manual stops at 65 fuel
ratio is 16:1 at that point. Same manual skips 66/67 starts at 68 Chrysler with a mix of 48:1.
Use TCW3 rated oil with what ever ratio you use.
I bought my manual used on eBay payed about
about 12 dollars.Covers many brands below 30 hp
58-72.Lots of tech info fairly good for procedure.

Re: Wards Sea King 6hp Questions

I've got the same motor. When it was given to me, thought it was locked up, but some dummy ran over a sand bar and sucked the foot full of sand, then never used it again, hence locked up. Anyway, cleaned it out, cranked in the drum, ran great, but ofcourse won't hold oil in the foot. Found a website which has the parts and will be glad to share...after I locate it again.

I got that in high school back in the eighties. My name is Mike Jones, and with my friends, if your name is Mike you are called Spike. My last name really made it stick because of the band leader named Spike Jones. It could be worse. My friend are ruthless! We have guys called rooster, the geek, frog, welfare, etc.
-Spiker
