Re: wards sea king 7

That is a 1973 7hp engine built by Clinton for Montgomery Wards. I show a fuel/oil mix of 32:1 for the J700 series engines. These take air cooled two-stroke oil (chainsaw/weedwacker) rather than TC-W3 oil (outboard).

If you can find a local mower/chainsaw shop that services Clinton engines, you'll likely be able to find the ignition parts you need from them.

As for whether it's worth restoring, I would say not. These are loud, vibrating, hot running outboards that collectors aren't interested in. But is it worth repairing and pressing back into service? I think it probably is, as long as you can get the ignition parts you need.

For a service manual, search the web for "The Outboard Motor Service Manual", Volume 1, '69-89. The local library might have something for you too.

Good luck and welcome to Iboats!

No trouble at all!

The 5hp SeaBee was manufactured for Goodyear by the Gale division of OMC in 1947. You might know the Johnson, Evinrude, and Lawnboy devisions better. This engine is basically the same as the old Johnson TD series engines ('41-49). Fuel/Oil mix for that one is 24:1 87 octane gas and TC-W3 outboard oil, and the spark plugs should be Champion J6C gapped at .030". J6C replaces the J6J, which is no longer made.

I know that a lot of those 5hp engines are still running today, and people think very highly of them. I also know that usually nothing seriously goes wrong with their ignition systems. So you may want to try simply pulling the flywheel and cleaning and gapping the points to open .020" max,and see if spark returns.

Best manual you can get for that one is the factory one from kencook.com, maxrules.com, marineengine.com, or theoutboardwizard.bizhosting.com .

Hope that helps!
