Warm Up Lever usage?

Hello,
I have a 76 Merc1150 and wanted to know what is the correct way to use the warm up lever?

Move warm up lever all the way engaged.. and then once you have the motor running how long before you move it back?

Do you leave the motor running for a couple of minutes before you begin to gradually move the lever back to an idle?

Is this only applied when the motor is first cranked up?

I dont have instructions and this is my first time starting an electric start motor with a control box.

Thanks,
Aaron

Lever all the way forward. Once it starts, bring it back halfway. Wait 5 -10 seconds and bring it all the way down. If it starts to sputter, put it back up a little bit to smooth it out then bring it back down.

Does it hurt the motor if you leave the lever on to long?
At what RPM should it be when the lever is up all the way?

Thanks,
Aaron

Iy doesn't hurt at all. It just opens the throttle to give you more gas while you warm up. Make sure it is all the way down and idling smoothly before you shift into gear.

semi hijack. Will it damage the control if you try and put it into gear with the fast idle lever engaged?

Marc, If you put the motor in gear while the warmup lever is up, it will push the lever down before it engages. That is if the control works correctly.

Thanks, just wondering because my brother managed to blow up the control recently. His philosophy is that if something is hard to push/undo that means push harder.

The engine will rev quite high if you raise the lever all the way. It is not necessary to have it full up unless the engine is flooded. The control lever and fast idle lever are interlocked so you can't shift unless the lever is down. How long it needs to be raised and how much depends on the condition and state of tune on the engine. It needs to be raised only enough to maintain a comfortable idle during warm up. It doesn't make sense to idle a cold engine at 3000 rpm if it will stay running at 1500.
