Re: Warning Buzzer 1999 150hp Johnson OceanPro

To all who have helped me, Almost Retired (I hope you get to!), Reel Appeal, Hooty, Dirtpoore, Clanton, and Haycord, Thank you very much!!!!!! I do have to say I am a little unsettled by not knowing the exact nature of the problem. I don't like to assume things however, sometimes I suppose we must. As I stated previously I will not be able to get to the boat until Wed. afternoon. When I do get to it, I will first clean all of the terminals. From that point I suppose I will put it in the water and stay close to the ramp for a little while. If at that point the buzzer does not sound I suppose I will have to assume it to be a ground problem. If, however, the buzzer does sound SHOOT ME!!!!! just kidding. I suppose I will seek you all out for more help before going to a johnson dealer. Thanks again
Brad F Heil

Hi Brad,
From what you have said you probly had the poppet valves in hand. The thermostats block the exiting water until the block reaches a predetermined temp. then it opens up letting some water circulate to keep the temp. relatively constant. When the engine is operating at, or near WOT the excess pressure from the water pump pushes the poppet valve open allowing more cooling water to circulate through the engine. the springs have a predetermined value to keep it closed until the water pump reaches enough pressure to push it open. Excuse the spelling please; I'm probly the worlds worse speller, but I hope you get the idea.
Good Luck

Almost Retired,
I'm right there with you when it comes to spelling. I also cannot type, so that makes mine that much worse!!!. I did wonder if, in fact, what I called plastic freeze plugs were POPPET VALVES. I concluded that the springs were temperature sensative to open up at a set high temp for more cooling. If these do go bad, what is it that goes bad, the springs , or the insert that the springs press up against. The insert look as if they are pressed in. Is this so?
Thanks again,
Brad

Hello Gentleman,
I'm sorry to say I was not able to get to the engine yesterday. With the much needed rain here I was not able to look at the engine. I will however, let you know something ASAP.
Brad

Hi Brad,
Those poppet valve springs are set to blow off thier seats when yhe water pump is putting out more pressure, and the enginr is operating at higher speeds and needs more cooling water.
I have only seen a couple of cases where they were at fault. One was cocked in the seat, and one had a torn seat, both of these were caught during overhaul. I don't remember if the seats were rubber or plastic (been a long time) however you're right they are just pushed in. Guess I could get out the manual and tell you for sure what they are, but like I've said I don't think they go bad very often.

Re: Warning Buzzer 1999 150hp Johnson OceanPro

Well gentleman,
I hate to say I don't have a clear-cut answer but I have to! I put the boat in the water yesterday and ran it for two hours with no problems. All I had done was clean the terminals on the buzzer. I really am not comfortable with un-answered problems. As an electrician, ground problems can do very strange things but, I am stumped as to why a ground makes the buzzer sound. The only thing that shopuld do this is a closed circuit and I did not find that. Thank you Almost Retired for all of the valuable information you gave me. A big thank you to everyone else who helped also. I only wish I had had a better answer for all of you.
Brad

Re: Warning Buzzer 1999 150hp Johnson OceanPro

Hello Gentleman,
I have somewhat isolated the problem about the warning buzzer. I am not sure of the protocol for this site so I posted the answer under "Problem known 1999 150hp Johnson Ocean Pro". If this is not the proper procedure please let me know. I thought it would be easier than having to read through all of the feedback that has been given in this particular page. I do appreciate all of the advice I have been given. Hope I don't sound too dizzy.
Brad
