Warning buzzer in neutral!

Hi there, can you help? My Yamaha 60 high thrust four stroke outboard's warning buzzer is sounding, *when the engine is in neutral, only. In forward or reverse the buzzer doens't sound. The oil level is good, fuel and battery charge and charging is good. Cooling water is as usual. The motor is less than a year old and we have had no problems up till today. Maintainence has been by the book. This is our life line as we live on a remote island. I have both the user manual and the workshop manual but the only reference is too oil pressure, over rev or overheating, none of which seem to be present.*

does that motor have wires coming off of the fuel filter on the motor itself?

seems water in fuel alarm on some motors will only sound if in neutral not in gear.

It is the engine mounted fuel filter. Actually, the water in the fuel cup sensor. Either there is water in the fuel cup or perhaps the sensor has failed.

If you don't see water in the cup, disconnect the coupler with the engine idling in gear. If the alarm goes away, it is the sensor.

Don't ask me why Yamaha in their infinite wisdom designed it this way. I would want the alarm to continue sounding to make sure water never got drawn into the engine itself.

He said it alarms in neutral not in gear
So does he really have to disconnect wires while in gear idling? If so why is that?

Oops. I meant to say disconnect the coupler when the motor is in neutral.
