Hi guys,

Had to replace the warning horn in my 1990 90hp rude due to malfunction.

The original horn was the three wire type (with the extra black wire)

I was able to obtain a second hand 2 wire horn for cheap.

Can this be connected up ok?, i tried just connecting the tan to tan and purple to purple but the horn just sounds continuously.

Thanks
Emmett

Re: Warning horn connections

The tan wire is getting grounded somewhere. It could be a bad heat sensor in the head.

Thanks bhile,

then it is ok to use a 2 wire buzzer in place of a three wire buzzer?

Thanks

Re: Warning horn connections

Hi, I had the same problem with mine with a 2 wire horn that I tried after my 3 wire horn was broken and it did the same thing (continuos beep) and I purchased a new 3 wire and it solved the problem.

Re: Warning horn connections

If you use a two wire horn, the tan wire should have no other connection at the helm except to one of the two horn wires. The other wire should be connected to the purple Accessory feed on the ignition switch.

If the horn then sounds, you have a ground somewhere on the tan wire would should be corrected.

The 3rd wire on the horn would be a ground and that's what you will need.

Ok, well I tried everything with the 2 wire one and couldn't get it to stop alarming until I plugged the three wire horn in with the ground wire.

Re: Warning horn connections

Ok, done a few tests today with the tan wires,

Horn continued to sound after removing both heat sensors, but stopped to sound when i removed the plug before the VRO pump, so i guess this indicates the sensor in the VRO is closing the circuit and showing a problem.

What problems can occur to activate this sensor?

No fuel?
No oil? (oil bulb is hard)

Thanks

Re: Warning horn connections

ok, so tried a few things today,

Found out that the continuos alarm stops in 2 cases (with key placed at on)

1. With the oil tank connections disconnected,

2. With the VRO plug disconnected.

Both of these must be disconnected for it to stop, signalling that both are causing fault.

For the vro2 pump i disconnected the oil line into pump, pumped prime bulb to ensure oil coming and connected up again, horn still sounding. does the motor need to be started up again to let oil flow into the pump and past a sensor or is primer bulb action enough?

For the tank sensor, the double wire coming from tank had its original connections (bullet and ring) snipped and replaced with crimps. i swapped over both wires and sound on that fault stopped, but not sure actual sensor is now working. Any ideas ezeke or anyone else?

Thanks

Re: Warning horn connections

I can get the 30 second low oil tone by crossing the 2 posts on the oil pick up unit. This tone can be heard over the continuous alarm tone.

Can i also note that the continuous alarm tone is much lower volume than;

1. The 30 second low oil tone
2. The tone heard form simply grounding one of the tank wires straight onto the block

Thanks

Re: Warning horn connections

Any suggestions ezeke?

or jwellcraft did the constant horn stop for you when you detached the oil tank or pump wires?

Thanks

Re: Warning horn connections

I pre-mix and don't have the oil tank anymore or the VRO pump. I replaced my faulty VRO pump a year ago with a OMC non VRO. I noticed my horn never did alarm and went to check it and found it was broken so tried using the 2 wire horn and it just sounded constant and purchased the 3 wire like what came off and everything was good from there so I never did any other test since it was fine and it does the little short beep once you turn the key on and then its off from there unless I get an overheat or fuel shortage.
