Warning Horn Problems

Hi Everybody...I have read several post on this subject but have not solved my problem. Any help would be appreciated.

I have an 1992 Evinrude 48 hp (E48ESLEN) that has the warning horn sounding constantly. At first it would only sound on start up and when the throttle was advanced the horn would stop. Now the horn sounds as soon as the key is turned and the starting circuit is disengaged (I can only pull start the engine now). I have disconnected the tan wire from the over temp sensor on the motor with no success. I have also disconnected the tan wire from the horn on the OMC throttle quadrant and the horn still sounds, although the horn is now very muffled with or without the tan wire connected, and the engine starting circuit is still not allowing for an electric start. I have also ohm checked the tan wire to ground to check for a short to ground and have a reading of open lead. I have also checked the t-stat to make sure it was not clogged with debris. This all started when I put the boat in the ocean for the first time this season and I did hit a large flotillas of sea weed but stopped the boat immediately and cleaned the lower unit off of all weed.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Warning Horn Problems

If the signal wire is disconnected from the buzzer and it keeps on beeping the buzzer is shot.

Re: Warning Horn Problems

Thanks for the quick reply...Does the starting circuit become disabled when the warning horn sounds? If I turn my key the horn sounds and when I turn the key to energize the starter I get nothing. The engine can be pull started but the starter circuit is dead. Will this problem be fixed once the horn is replaced?

Re: Warning Horn Problems

disconnect the big red plug. this will take the control, and forward wiring harness out of the test equation.

now with a remote switch or jumper wire, connect to the large incoming battery post on the starter solenoid, the other end of the jumper wire goes to the small post with the yellow wire. touching these should activate your starter. you can start the motor using this method. if you get nothing you may have a bad starter solenoid, or dirty coroded connections. Battery must be fully charged.

Re: Warning Horn Problems

Thanks for the help, I will try that tonight and post back the results. Reading several of the post on this subject leads me to believe that the no start is a problem unassociated with the horn problem. Is that a correct assumption? Even with the horn sounding I should be able to start the motor with the key.

Re: Warning Horn Problems

Thanks to all who posted and helped me figure this problem out. Tashasdaddy, I tried the jumper wire and it worked like a charm. Good trick to tuck away for future use. I believe I have narrowed the problem to a faulty horn as jonesg diagnosed. With the engine not being able to turn over and the horn problem I thought the 2 problems might be related somehow and causing the engine not to start.

Do you see a problem with extending the purple and tan into the center console and using an automotive horn instead of the OMC horn? It would be much esier to pull the wires of the horn under the console then disassembling the controls when out on the water.

Can anyone recommend a good maintenance manual for my Evinrude?

Thanks again...you guys are great!!!

Re: Warning Horn Problems

Your horn is faulty, and overpriced as well Im sorry to say.

Get yourself a factory OEM Service manual from ebay. Should be plenty available on there for that model. If you cannot find one let us know and we will help locate it.

There is a 20 amp fuse inline at the starter. Glass type in a twist connector. Check it to ensure that it is not blown.

Short of that, follow the steps in the FAQ for "Outboard Wont Start" by JB and let us know what you find.
