I have a 1993 175 Johnson Fast Strike. It appears that the warning horn does not work. This horn lets you know when the oil is low or empty or when the engine is overheating. It is suppose to give a short beep when the engine switch is turned on and that does not appear to be working at all. Where is the horn located and is there a wiring drawing for this?

Turn the key on, then disconnect the tan wire leading to the temp sensor on the engine. Ground the wire (not the sensor end -- the other end) to the block. The horn should sound. If not, there is a wiring problem or the horn is bad. For schematics you may find a service manual at your library. Otherwise they are available on this site.

Only late model horns will beep when you turn the key on. They are recognized by a separate black ground wire that has to be hooked up, in addition to the purple hot wire and the tan sensor wire.

Depending on how your boat is rigged, the horn will be behind your dash or inside the control box.

Re: Warning Horn

I found the horn. As you stated it has the purple power wire, and a tan and a black wire ( the black wire is hard wired into the horn) The horn seams weak. What is the part number for this and where can I order one? My placard also states that when no oil is present there will be short rapid tones from the horn. What sets this off? I verified the low oil position sensor and it gives a short tone every 40 secs. Thanks in advance.
