Warning Horn?

Warning horn on my 2002 90hp Johnson sounds like someone is holding a pillow over it. Doesn't look repairable, wondering if anyone had any thought's other than a $40.00 replacement. Don't want to sound cheap, seems a bit much for this part.

They are over priced arent they.

Whatever direction you decide to go, I would not run the motor until you have remedied the situation.

Does the ground wire look good? Clean connection?

Is the tan wire attached to the terminal closest to the black wire?

Did it just start doing this?

Being part of the engine check system, you are rather stuck with it, otherwise, any 12 volt buzzer, or horn would work.

The boat has been in the garage. Went out this morning to start going over all the connections, turned the key and there we go. I guess its always something.

The OMC horns have a metal plate with a metal ring around the perimeter. The contact between the two parts degrades with corrosion until there is no electrical contact. As it degrades, less and less sound is generated and finally none at all.

If you have plenty of time on your hands or just want to pull one apart to see how they are made, proceed carefully and you may even be able to improve it.

You can use the little $5.00, 12 volt horns that they sell at radio shack - they usually have a good variety of different sounds to choose from. They won't last long in the dampness either. You can upgrade to the self test horn. Or you can even replace the horn with a boat signal horn and wire it to do both jobs as long as the load requirement is low.
