i have a 150 evinrude intruder 1996 year. i am getting a warning horn after the motor has been running for about 3.5 to4mins. i turn off the motor and restart it and the horn will start about 3.5 to4 mins after i restarted the motor. could someone tell what to do to fix this problem and what is causing this horn to go off. the horn comes on and off about 1.2 sec apart. need help in satsuma alabama. thanks.

Re: warning horns?

Euell.... That warning (every other second or so) indicates that you do not have the proper amount of oil at the VRO. You can test this by (when the horn sounds off) applying pressure to the oil primer bulb. With pressure applied, the alarm should stop.... release the pressure, if the alarm starts again, there is either a air leak in the oil line, the oil tank is empty, or the VRO pump has failed.

There is always the chance that the horn itself is failing.... installing another horn in the line would test that, but do the pressure test as above first.

Re: warning horns?

captain

the oil bulb is hard. this horn is every other second. it is like it is timed after about 3-4 mins the horn comes on. could this be a fuel problem? the fuel bulb will get hard when you first pump it up but don't stay hard. buy the way i am the person that ask you where i could get my block welded. i got it back and put it back together. motor is running good but still have this problem. had this problem before i rebuild it. could you tell me how to test all the warning horns? i would like to know before i install a new vro$$$$.

Re: warning horns?

I would suggest adding 50:1 to your tank while you figure out what's going on. Lack of oil is serious, and that's what the alarm is telling you.

Euell... I'm in full agreement with WildeOne on adding in the 50/1 fuel/oil mixture until you solve this problem. The fuel bulb not staying hard is normal.

Even though the oil bulb is hard (normal), did you pump (apply pressure) to the oil primer bulb as I suggested when that alarm sounded? If not, do it! If the alarm stops when you do that, the explanation as explained in my previous post holds.

You could also temporarily remove the oil hose at the engine to see if oil will flow when you apply pressure to that oil bulb.

It does sound like the VRO has failed, but do the checks first.

Re: warning horns?

capatin

i did put pressure on the oil bulb and it did stop the horn and it did not come back on. the bulb is very hard to pump, had to push very hard to get the horn to stop. do you think i need to replace the vro just to be safe? also the fuel bulb i have to pump it every time i start the motor. i have replaced the bulb and i still have to pump it before i start the motor. when the motor is running the bulb is not hard. the motor will not start if i don't pump the bulb.

o by the way thinks for all your help.

Re: warning horns?

Euell44...Replacing the fuel primer bulb might be a good idea, but there's no need to replace the oil primer bulb. From what you've said (and I know the oil bulb is very hard to press) it's possible that the oil line simply had air in it, I'd suggest running the engine one more time to see if the alarm still comes on, and if it does, replace the VRO.
