I dropped my boat off at my service marina a week and a half ago because I was getting a backfire while driving under load. after taking advice from this board and trying all of the basic stuff (plugs, water fuel separator, etc) it was time for the pros to look at it.

I got a call today that they upgraded/replaced the ECM, replaced the distributor cap, and replaced the coil and all the parts were covered by mercruiser.

Mercruiser also covered 1 hour for diagnosis and 1.5 hours for replacement of the parts on the labor side.

My mercruiser servicer is telling me that they had 6.5 hours into the job and are looking for me to pay the rest.

Is this an issue between mercruiser and the marina or do I have to pay the difference.

I know there is a $25 deductible for service under the product protection plan form my Horizon 350 MPI Bravo, but I thought that the authorized service marinas had to accept the standard payment from Mercruiser. S

Sorry for the long post, I am just frustrated and concerned that I am being asked to pay for my mechanic's problem.

Your mechanic may have had a hard time finding your problem, and servicing it.
Your engine may be hard to access or corroded and hard to work on.This could be the reason for additional charges.
Merc pays basic fees to a dealer but few jobs run in the time they allow.Usually we absorb the cost.
But IF it did actally take that long, and Mercruiser won't pay me,what should I do? As a dealer?
DHP

YOU, DO NOT have to pay the difference, that is between Mercruiser and your dealer. Call Mercruiser customer service and explain the situation. If there is extra time involved, the dealer can explain the situation to Mercruiser and get extra hours added if allowed, but they are not allowed to get the extra pay from you.
Your engine is warranted by Mercruiser and their dealer system fixes them. And as a dealer, you have to play by Mercruiser rules.
PS: I work for a Mercruiser dealer and I know Mercruiser will not stand for a dealer doing that.

Re: Warranty work

Guys,

Thanks for the advice. The mechanic is a Mercruiser Dealer/Authorized service marina. The motor is accessible, especially the Areas replaced.

The time that wasn't covered was diagnosis time. Apparently they took 5 hours to determine the problem and 1.5 hours to replace the coil, distributor cap and ECM.

I left a thorough note describing the problem, everything that I had done, (replaced the fuel/water separator & checked the plugs). I am not really sure they ever figured out which or the components was bad, but they said it is running well now.

More than a half-day for diagnosis? Can he give you a specific breakdown of what he did, hour by hour?

That is like when employees tell me they worked a "70 hour week." That means they started at 6 each day, took no lunch for 6 days, and worked until 6 each night, Monday through Saturday.

Ask the mechanic to walk you through everything he did.
