i was reading the omc manual last night and have a few ?s

1. how do i know if i have a 5.0 or 5.7? (manual says if alt is on top its a 5.7 but if alt is next to the fuel pump its a 5.0 well my alt does not fit next to the pump but guy the sold me the motor said he thinks its a 5.0)

2. what brand name spark plugs should i use?

3. shift rod ? what the hell is 7-13/64? lol is there a website like ebay or iboats i can buy the tool or make one?

4. book says my idle should be 550 to 600 in forward gear, so what should it be on muffs or land?

5. power steering, does it do the samething on a boat like on a car? (i have p.s but was not hooked up)

6. can i change the direction of my remote cable to the carb or can i just turn the carb around so insted of the link being on the right side it will be on the left side?

7. i think thats all for now lol

1989 omc (5.0 i think) cobra on a 23ft sunbird barletta......

3,.. Donno...

4,.. 'bout 550/ 600 rpms,... recheck it after ya splash it, 'n readjust accordingly...

5,.. Yes, it makes it Easier to turn...

6,.. I really doubt the carb can be turn 180?.... for Many reasons, so move the cable...

Rochester carburetor... Well the problem is that the remote cable wants to move forward and the carb link wants to move backwards, so for it to work I need to turn the cable around for it to work but the alt n the belt will be in the way.... Oh another ? Um I have log exhaust and I need new ones but I don't think I am going to have the room for the new center exhaust so can I just still buy the log exhaust??? But Wich is better???

Some controls can be changed, post a picture of what you have.

Was there any OMC model numbers on the engine anywhere?

The shift rod height 7 13/64 is on the outdrive, not the engine. You have to have the drive off the boat to see it.
Here is a site you should look at if you plan on messing with the drive or the shift adjustment.

Well Bond-O the thing is that this merc dealer that I use to get parts from said that the carb I had was from a truck cuz it had a vacuum choke or something. So he says I need a new " marine carb" so I bought one cuz I needed one anyways..... Can't do nothing now cuz he is out of Business...... But I must say the motor runs really good n sounds grate...

Don S I could not find any numbers when I had the motor apart but will look again...

The boat is all closed up but it's just a omc remote but I will see if I can take some pics....

I am having hard time shifting but don't know if it's from the ESA not working or I adjust the cable wrong....

Yes, but I don't know what control they used in 89. But, I have worked on OMC controls many times.

Hard shifting going into gear, or out of gear, or both?

Is this the engine you put the Thunderbolt IV system in?

Ok I will try to take a pic today...

I think when I go into gear it grinds but when I want to get out of gear I need to turn off the motor just to get out of gear lol...,

Yes that's the one I have the merc setup on my omc....

As I mentioned in your distributor thread, you can not use the ESA with the TB4 ignition system. Have you tried activating the shift interrupt switch to see if the engine dies while activated? It should.

Of course, if you don't have the boat in the water, then it wouldn't activate anyway. disconnect the lower shift cable from the engine and see if you can push and pull the cable to shift gears while then engine is running. If you can't, you probably need a new lower cable.

Re: was reading manual got a few ?s

Don S at the time I did not have the merc stuff I was useing points still so when I went to merc I put the boat away.....

I did remove the cable at one time and I think it was a little hard to shift ( I think that's when I was adjusting the cable) but motor was off...

Ayuh,... The R43T is a steel body automobile plug,...

The M stands for Marine, 'n is an Alloy body plug,... less rust.... 'n less apt to rust into the head...

Not familiar with the insides of that control, so I can't tell you if it can be changed or not.

As far as carb corrosion, it's in an enclosed are with moisture in the air from condensation and lack of air circulation, and it's bare metal. You should have at least painted it before you installed it, then it wouldn't do that. If you like the unpainted look, one of the clear coats would have kept it from rusting.
