Was told to replace a upper shaft seal on my gen 1 outdrive, trying to identify it

A reputable marina had advised on my alpha 1 gen 1 when doing my impeller to change the seal that’s in the upper unit. I don’t know exactly what it’s called but I want to make sure I have it in my outdrive kit.

I think i found it but I believe this is a picture of a gen 2 but it’s in that area. If anyone is familiar with what they are talking about can advise on it and if it’s a good dies to change or any tricks to it.

Ayuh,..... That diagram is the lower unit, by yer description, you need the seals in the Upper unit,.....

Sorry my mistake I’m on my phone and finding a gen 1 parts diagram is challenging at the moment. I think it’s this one.

if they meant the shift shaft bushing, thats in the lower unit, or do you mean the shaft seal in the upper unit.

Shaft seal in the upper unit. Its near the area where the o-ring on the splined shaft that most people don't put back in is at.

13 is the oil seal and is changed by disassembling the upper , 14 is the lower water seal and is replace without disassembly

Thanks BT. Do you know anything about not running that Oring below the splines after it was found it’s not needed? I know the Gen 2 alphas don’t need it but wasn’t sure about Gen 1’s.

There was a recent post on this same subject. Seemed the consensus was to leave the O ring out. The two seals do the sealing, and the O ring rides along with the drive pinion. The seals are really stretched when the O ring passed thru. But I'd give the O ring groove a good dab of grease so it doesn't stress the seals with it's corners as it passes thru

Thanks for the tip. I dont have much of a boating season left here so ill give it a go hopefully get it out on the water a few times and drain/check the fluid for next season.
