Washer starts by itself?

Just had it happen. Lid is up, no-one around, and it started, shot water, ran for a moment, and shut down all by itself. Never had it happen before. No electric storms or phenomenon going on. Its about a 6 year old Kenmore Elite top loader. Anyone have this happen? We will be unplugging it when we leave from now on.

Timer gone bad........ ouch it is a big money part

Lid switch should have prevented this.......or.......maybe the timer was in the run position and the lid switch failed?

Have you ever seen maximum overdrive?

Six years may just be time for a new washer. Thats about all they last for me, of course I have a well with extreamly hard water.

Tech replaced the Touch Pad $196.99, Labor $129.00, $325.99 for the day. Time for a wringer washer

My dumb@$$ just bought a timer/switch $96 because I thought IT was broken. As I went to install it I noticed it functioned the same as the one I thought was broken, turns out the plastic teeth on the knob that engage the clicking selector had broken off, $9 part. I read the fine print on the invoice from the seller, NO RETURNS ON ELECTRIC PARTS. I explained I never installed it and really only needed a knob, they said sorry its yours now and they could order the knob for me. I told them I would not buy anything from them anymore and asked why they didnt ask me to check knob when i called to see if they had the switch, but I know why.
