Washing out motor after running in salt water

I use my Johnson 25 HP in the bay. I have never ran it in freshwater. I like to try and wash the salt out of the motor as much as possible when I am done. I was just wondering how long should you run freshwater through the engine for? I usually do it for around 15-20 minutes or so. Not sure if that's not enough or if I'm going overboard.

I dont run in salt water, but I would think 5 min after the thermostat opens, or is at running temp, it should be good.

I'm a smoker so I let mine run on the hose for as long as it takes me to burn one, prolly 10 min or so. Take it to a freshwater lake for a day of fun if you really want to get the salt out. The important thing is that you flush it everytime after running in salt (my opinion).

I go to the beach all the time. 10-20 min should be fine. Be sure to hose down the exterior of the motor too.

i agree with kfa, run it for 20 mins or so, hose down the complete exterior and your motor will love you for it.(some people even spray things like wd-40 under the cowl, after the engine is cool)

Yeah, nwcove, I probably should, but I'm too lazy:) I think they even make products you can buy that you can cycle/flush through the motor to remove salt, but I just run it in a tank. No problems....yet.

Re: Washing out motor after running in salt water

Alright thanks for the replies everybody. I am happy to know I am doing the right thing by letting it run for 20 minutes on the muffs. I usually do spray down the leg of the motor after coming out of the bay. Once in a while I will spray the hood also but not much. Are those products even worth buying? Has anybody tried them at all with good results? Just wondering if they actually work and stuff.

I've never bought them and no one I know uses them and I've lived in Florida my whole life. They may work, but I doubt they're necessary. Make sure you don't go much above idle on the muffs. I believe they make 2-sided muffs too that give even more water flow.
