I was getting my trailer ready checking out the wiring and I noticed how many old wasp nests there was in the open channels. It is still cold so none are active right now. And I was thinking one these days I am going to grab the tounge on the trailer and I am going to get zapped. Then it hit me how to prevent that. I sprayed some Great Stuff expanding foam into all the openings to seal them shut. I don't think I will have any more problems with hidden nests.

Remember everyday is just another day in paradise.

Let us know if your trailer floats when youre trying to get your boat back on it. :)

And Id be worried about rusting like bond-o said.

A little chunk of screen cut and bent to fit the opening would probably keep the little buggers out...

Got to agree with that! Those beams are open for a reason...;)
The screen idea is a much better option.

After getting all of that foam in place what happens if you have to work on the wiring?

The screen is a good suggestion in my opinion.

Re: Wasp In Trailer Beam

Well, the openings I am talking about are towards the front of the trailer, so I really do not think I will dunking that end of the trailer underwater anytime soon. Then I only put enough to to seal the holes, not to fill the whole beam up. If for some reason I should have to pull the wires, it is a straight shot so I just have to poke a metal rod through and fish my wires. The trailer is galvanized, and that stuff expands sealing shut, so I really do not see a problem with moisture getting in there, like I said before I will not be putting the back of my truck in the water anytime soon. I also had a post that open at the top and sealed shut at the bottom that is vertical. I guess they made it this way so when rains it will hold water so you can get a drink later. Well I sealed that shut too. Can somebody tell me why when they cut the holes for the trailer wiring to run through they do not put some type of grommet around the hole to keep from chaffing the wires. Maybe this is just my trailer, but they do even clean up the cut made by torch. But hey, you all maybe right, only time with tell. I will write another one if it does rust out and let you know

AS far as the wire grommets go they do have them, not sure how old your trailer is. In the case of my '85 escort they rotted out and i had to put new ones in when i changed the wiring.

A couple of rounds of that thick rubbery electrical tape does a good job of dunning the wires where they go through a rough hole. It's lousy insulation, but good padding.

I just use wasp spray. I "hit" the trailer with some every once in awhile and all is well.

The great stuff idea is on the right track IMHO. Just make sure you have some small wasp proof drain holes. or larger holes with steel or aluminum mesh. they seem to be able to chew through the plastic stuff. We have a server wasp problem up here as well and that worked for me, Just did the endcaps and them drilled a few drains and epoxied the screen on the bottom. Worked so good they moved upstairs to the boat now!!!

A little chlorinated brake cleaner up the tubes once in awhile keeps them unoccupied.

brake cleaner is the cheapest wasp / hornet spray you can get...I visit U-Pull it junk yards often , and always carry a fresh bottle of it...can be bought for under $2 per bottle...:D

It knocks em down quicker than wasp spray, and dissipates quickly, leaving no residue. Wasp spray residue is poisonous and can hurt you.

The police dept here recomends using wasp spray rather than mace or pepper spray, why? up to 30 ft range versus 5ft, and it will blind whoever you spray for a temporary period.

I like the Brake cleaner and there is no greasy residue.

Why not stuff the ends with some 000 steel wool.

Though I think I would rather have the wasps in my tongue where it is easy for me to get to them. Better than under the boat cover.

I think the steel wool will rust....
