I started fishing the Longboat pass jetties 40 years ago as a teenager. Off
and on for the past 40 years I have traversed those slippery rocks with the
sure footed ness of a mountain goat. Last night we were visiting relatives in
Bradenton and I took my son and daughter in law to the jetties for some snook
fishing. They had gone to the truck and I stayed out for a last cast or two.
Then my daughter in law asked my son "Where is your dad?". I had disappeared
from the end of the jetties. They took off running and got there just in
time to find me struggling in the current trying to climb back onto those
slippery rocks. I am so embarrassed. I guess old age has caught up to me.

Yup when I think of what could have happened. Many a person has died in Longboat Pass over the years. That current is treacherous. I couldn't have picked a better place to slip, anywhere else I would have either gone down hard on the rocks or fallen into deep swift water. I fell where the water was only 4' deep and had a large rock in front of me that slowed the current. Even at that I had to throw my rod up on the rocks and hold on with both hands to keep from getting swept out. I know enough not to fight against that kind of tide, a number of years ago there was a whole family that drowned at that very spot. One fell in and the others tried to save him. They tried to swim against the current instead of letting it take them around the point. But even knowing the proper survival techniques I am not sure a fully clothed man in his mid 50s with a bad heart could have made it around the point if the current had pulled me out. I was real lucky to come out unharmed. I tend to do too many of the things I did when I was young and healthy. I just need to be a little more careful now.
