I flushed my engine a couple weeks ago on muffs using 5 gallon of antifreeze. I did not drain engine prior to flushing. Thermostat was open. After completed, I removed large thermo hose to check and it was full of pink liquid. Successful!<br /><br />This past weekend, I removed large thermo hose to check again. I poured a cup of clear water out. I then decided to just drain and fill hoses with antifreeze and not trust the quick flush technique. When I drained everything, it looked like only pink antifreeze was coming out.<br /><br />Where did clear water come from?

wild<br />there is a lot of area in a block that may take a long time to flush out a water pocket in a lower flow area <br /><br />my people drain and manualy refill to avoide this problem which if your going to go the antifreeze way is safer IMHP<br /><br />for my self it is why i find it safest to store motors dry<br /><br />tommays

WC,the most important step in using the kit is making sure the motor is warmed up suffeciently so the thermostat is wide open.When I use the kit I go so far as to warm up the antifreeze prior to sending it through the o/d to be sure the stat stays open.Sounds like yours was either not opened full yet or started to close.Charlie

Truthfully, I just plane NEVER run a raw water cooled engine on muffs and a 5 gallon bucket because you can't keep the thermostat open using less than 150° antifreeze without haveing the engine under a load. And that can't be done on the muffs.<br />If you want to be sure you get antifreeze into the block, after you run it, drain the block, then pull the thermostat out of the housing and dump your antifreeze into the manifold. That is the only SURE way of doing it.<br />Study a cooling system diagram, and you will understand what I am saying. When you look at it, imagine it as if the stat is closed. Below is a typical Mercruiser raw water cooled system.<br /><br />

Bondo<br />That will never work here ...... way to easy. <br /><br />DHP<br />If the thermostat is closed, the engine circulation pump will not circulate water through the block until the thermostat is open and the raw water pump will not push the thermostat open because the pressure is on the wrong side of the thermostat. Then, when putting antifreeze in the engine with a 5 gal. bucket and muffs, some of the AF is going to spill because the muffs do not seal on the drive completely. The rest is going to go out through the manifolds and risers till the stat opens.......usually with about 1 or 2 quarts of antifreeze left in the bucket which isn't enough to protect the block completely.

Since I am a newbie, I have another question. <br /><br />I drained the block and removed the large hose from thermostat. I filled it with AF until it came out of thermostat. Why does it come out of thermostat if it is totally closed?

I have a 5.0L MPI 260 HP with Alpha 1. Since the 5 gallon muff flush was not successful, even though the engine has a 160 F thermostat, was warmed up flushing with Salt Away, and the engine was at 168 F. <br /><br />I eventually drained the engine and poured AF in the large thermo hose until it came out of thermo and reconnected hose. This took about 2.5 gallons of AF. I then removed the two hoses from thermo that go to below manifold and filled till it came out thermo, reconnected hoses. This took about 1 gallon of AF. I then removed the one hose from riser and filled till AF came out of hose connection on riser. I then plugged hole in riser and poured more AF until it came out exhaust. <br /><br />1. I was concerned that since the thermostat was totally closed, how does the engine fill with AF if the thermostat does not vent.<br /><br />2. I have a check valve between the PS cooler and Fuel cooler. I assume the check valve vents this system, but I flushed with AF to be sure.<br /><br />3. It seems that I could have just removed the one hose from the riser and got the whole system filled with AF.<br /><br />Any input would be appreciated. I have had a hard time verifying this information because not many people have the single point drain system.<br /><br /><br />

Don S,I gotta diagree with you.I have used the Camco kit for years without a problem at all.If the engine temp does not rise high enough while warming up(and the engine must run for a while to warm up), you can turn down the water flow and the temp WILL rise.The key with the anti freeze is to make sure it is at least room temp and mix it with hot water.This will assure the stat stays open and again ,The engine temp WILL rise. I have done this minimal effort approach at least 15 times with great results.I dont use a homemade bucket style kit.Charlie
