water circulating pump squeal

Hello,
Took my boat out for the first time this year. when we reached operating temp we got up on plane, and I as started to trim there was a squeal from the area of the circulating pump. It only happens when going over 1,800 rpm when operating the trim (80% of the time)....it only happened a time or 2 without touching the trim when throttling and it only lasts about 10 seconds. The boat runs great and the water temps are normal.
Belt were adjusted (new) and it still happens. Im ready to order a new circulating pump but I see it a little weird that it would start squealing when you bump the trim. It sounds just like when a older cars waterpump is going bad, As far as i know this pump is the original 87

New belts were put on 2 weeks ago
impellar and housing replaced in drive end of 08(about 8 hrs run time on impellar).
mechanical fuel pump replace 2 weeks ago.

If anybody can shine alittle light on my issue I thank you in advance.
Thank you,
Denny

Are the belts tight?? Are the pulleys rusty?

Re: water circulating pump squeal

Belts are tight ajusted them a few times with no change. (New Belts) about 1/2" of play pressing firm.

pulleys were not rusty but I cleaned and painted them before I put the new belts on a few weeks ago.

While it was squealing i did spray belt dressing on the pulleys and the noise did not change at all.

I changed the belt for routine maintenance, not because of the squeal I noticed the squeal today in the water.

Thanks,
Denny

Re: water circulating pump squeal

It may be the circulation pump or even the alternator causing the noise. Remove the belt and turn both and see if one of them may be the problem.

It Squeals when the Alternator is under Load...Trimming...

Thanks for all the replies...when I pull the belts and turn both by hand what am I feeling for????(dumb question) play in the pulley/rough spot etc.??

Makes sense that the alt is causing the noise because it does it when I trim up (under load) but I swear it sounds like its comming from the circulation pump but it is tight in there so anything is possible....alt is still pushing 14v.
thanks,
Denny

Re: water circulating pump squeal

Ok, I went out to the boat today took the 2 belts off spun the circulating pump pulley that seemed to be fine. Spun the alternator pully that checked out also.
I Just happened to take a better look at the water pump pulley and noticed some rubber dust on it....seemed to me the belt WAS slipping. That belt runs the pump and alternator.
This time I gave it all i got hardly any play in the belt now. Started it on the muffs turned on everything electrical (load) throttled to around 2,000 ran the trim and there was no squeal..
I tried and tried to get it to do it again and nothing:). At this point I assuming when the alternator was under load and the belt just slid over the water pump pulley making it squeal at the water pump... So i think we got it. I will put it on the water next weekend and try again.

Thanks alot guys for pointing me to the alternator/belts before I started throwing money at a circulating pump and/ or a alternator, unless something is locking up time to time i think were good to go. I guess i started to get a case of tunnel vision.
I thought they were tight enough apparently not.;)

Glad you seem to have found a fix to the belt problem. By the way, most mechanics do not recommend using belt dressing. It only gives temporary relief but never cures the problem, and may lead to premature belt wear. If you've got a two-belt setup, check the tension on the second belt as well. It may be causing your squeal. Good luck. Hy

I normaly dont use belt dressing I carry it on the boat for situations like I had basicly as a quick fix until I brought the boat in,. It did not help anyways............I tightened both belts as tight as I could. Next weekend will be the test.
Thanks
Denny
