On the back end of a very succesful father/ son ( 7 yrs old - he caught 10 blues)4AM fishing trip my 1980 40 hp merc o/b coughed and went rough. I turned to see water coming out from under the hood and only trickling from the pee hole. The water is coming out around the top plug. I flushed the engine with fresh h2o for 45mins and then removed the plugs and sprayed liberally with pb blaster. The yard will diagnose "in a couple of weeks we can probaly fit you in". What am I looking at? Was it caused by sucking mud? Does my engine have a head gasket? solid head? I see no cracks on the outside. Inside my engine I can't see-- inside my self I'm deeply wounded.

Busterblue...we have 2 scenarios here and I am thinking yours is #2...first, there is corosion worked it's way through the water jacket to the cylinder, toss it out...second and more likely is there is a water leak that shorted out the spark plugs and cause some missfiring. I would look at the water jacket on the back of the injun, it bolts on where there should be a head. A thin casting that sometimes causes grief but can normally be repaired. You can start the motor without the cowling on,using muffs, and visually inspect for water. If it runs I doubt it's the first scene, besides, you wouldn't see any water inside. Post what you find and we can go from there. I am sure there are many experts here that can walk you thru a repair of this sort...just a Thought

buster i would make sure that the water jacket gasket hasnt peeled off around the plug.. thats what happened with my 35 merc and we had to move it about 1/16 of an inch to get it to stop

When running, and it does run - its rough and loud, water comes out around the top spark plug. I don't see it coming out from anywhere else. I have not started taking any parts off except the "hood".

water shouldn't be able to come thru the spark plug unless the plug is broken....just a Thought

THe water is not coming thru the plug its coming around it.

Do you mean the water is coming from around the threads of the sparkplug? If so you have a second problem because the threads may be stripped along with the fact that water is getting in the cylinder.<br /><br />Rich

Water cover gasket. Should take 15 minutes to remove and inspect gasket surface on block around plug hole.

Remove all the bolts that secure the cover (what might be described as the head) carefully trying not to break any of them. Then with some gentle persuasion remove cover, carefully scrape clean any residual gasket. Replace with new gasket. You can add a small ring of silicone gasket maker around the effected area(s) as additional assurance the problem won't reappear after re-assembly. Torque to spec.

by the cover do you mean the plate that's bolted to the back side of the engine with the bolt forming an oblong ring around the two spark plugs?<br /><br />If so do I hvae to remove any other parts to be able to get tothe part I need to work on?

When you get the cover off, check the area around the spark plug for corrosion pits on the block and the cover.
