I have a Evenrude 5.5, 1957 motor that is losing power under load, I pulled the flywheel and everything looks rebuilt. It starts, I had it running and pulled off the top plug wire and I have spark jumping and changing the rpm some, i Pulled the bottom wire off and it stalls.
I tried pulling the plug out and starting it, I have water shooting out of the top cyclinder.
What is my porblem and what parts am I going to need?

Where am I looking for the head gasket? give me a 350 chevy motor and I would not need answers!!
Is it the plate where the plugs are? Or is it on the side where the wires are crossing?

Click the thumbnail please.

Usually water gets in through the blown head gasket, but if that's OK, you probably will need to replace the exhaust cover gaskets.

Both usually get damaged by the engine overheating.

The head is the part of the motor the spark plugs screw into. The head gasket is immediately behind it. You should also re-surface the head while you have it off. You need a piece of flat glass and 120 grit sand paper. Keep going over the sand paper (in a figure 8 pattern) until all the high marks are worn down. You also need to torque the head and I don't know the torque for your head. Someone will. Best of luck. Rick.

you guys are great! I will spend more time here to try to help others. thank you again.
Would that manual have the part #'s I need?:p I think I will go ahead and replace the exaust gasket too.
I work in a machine shop, so will a diamond plate work to flatten the head? I am not a machinest! but I know how to lap on a diamond plate;)

A diamond plate will do a great job. Make sure not to take any more off than necessary though. My advice is to let the vendor look up the part numbers. Some numbers have changed and if there is any mistakes in ordering it will be there problem not yours. I may be overly cautious cause our local Evinrude dealer is a very difficult person. I know he would order the numbers I gave him even if he new they were wrong and he would not take the parts back. Rick.

ezeke, that website did have the part # I needed. I had been lookiing all over trying to find a part # and decided to come back here and ask, did a little follow up on your post and BINGO there is was. Head gasket for a 5.5 evinrude is OMC 303438, and can be ordered at NAPA under # 18-2885. Just in case someone else reads this post.

You can see the signs of overheating on the exhaust cover where the paint is brown. You should check the water pump. Was it pumping water well when it was running?

I have the parts manual for the '56 Evinrude 5.5hp if you want me to email it to you. I think they're very similar. If yes, pm me your email address. It also shows the head gasket as 303438.

Water spits out of the back, it does not stream. Do I have a problem?

I ordered it at the local auto parts store, 6 something and will be in on Mon. Arrow parts.

Lapped the head and ready for the gasket.

It just spits.
You should be able to put your fingers on the head without burning them for a count of 3 when its running.
