water coming out shift shaft, weak stream from tell

when on earmuffs, i'm getting water coming out the shift shaft, and a weak stream from the pee hole.

should there be any leakage other than the imperfect seal of the muffs?

*update*

waterpump looks fine, but i cleaned out silty grit and changed gaskets, and am switching out the mashed up grommet on the water tube.

does water coming out the shifter hole mean anything? is it hose pressure?

if im good to go next step is the water test.

if you've followed my other posts this is the 70hp merc with the once cracked head. its about to hit the water...

Not much to go on.

Not sure what you mean by water out of the shift shaft?

Muffs do leak quite a bit. On the larger motors I have had troubles getting decent waterflow out of the telltale.

As for the waterpump, its sometime difficult to visually see good from bad. I just changed one that looked OK but barely pumped any water. Took about 30-40 seconds before I saw water at the telltale and it was a dribble. With the new pump assy I have water in about 5-10 seconds and a much stronger stream. I have a 1970 Merc 80hp.

As cheap insurance I would replace the impeller at least. Sometimes the stainless steel insert cup needs to be replaced as well. You've got it apart, why not be sure.

the impeller is slightly shaped to one side, but is very pliable.
i have seen a few impellers and this one looks new.

its possible the last guy to install the impeller missed the watertube alignment when reassembled.

i replaced the paper gaskets and the grommet on the tube.

unfortunately i dropped the keyway in the dirt and its raining right now. i better find it....

From your description, odds are the tube from the water pump to the power head is messed up.

If water fills up the mid and comes out holes in the top, the water pump is pumping water into it instead of to the power head via the tube.

i've seen a few people on youtube videos grease their impellers, is this recommend?

Lubing a new impeller helps with installation into the upper housing. When new, the impeller vanes are straight and tough to get formed and fit into the upper housing.

Under normal operation, lube is not required.

WRT the waterpump, the condition of the S/S insert cup is just as important as the condition of the impeller. If groves are worn into the top of the insert, a proper seal is not formed by the impeller and water bypasses the output.

the housing has lots of grooves in it, i assume from sand that got in there from previous owner.

i'll try finding a new housing, and impeller kit, the grooves seem to be whats killing it.

The housing has to be smooth. Believe it or not, the end plate is more critical than the sleeve. Put in a complete pump.

The water coming out of the shift shaft hole is water leaking from the tube somewhere. Either the tube is bad, or one of the gaskets on it is bad.
