Water cooling (Dumb question - sorry)is

One more dumb question for now all. Forgive me, I am an aircraft tech and mech, and an auto guy. I am learning lots about the water cooled outboard stuff, but some of it is quite different. The void under the rectifier (1986 Evinrude xp150)....is that what they call the water jacket? Does it fill completely with water, and that's how the rectifier/regulator gets a cool bath? I ask, because I am starting to wonder if that was filled up the other day, when it got hot. (I had no horn) If that was dry, I am hosed. (no pun intended)

Yes that is a liquid cooled rectifier. Not a dumb question at all

Greg, this is the smoking stator issue right?

If so, do a compression test.

Do an open air gap spark test on each cylinder,

Goto the cdi site and test your stator if compression is even across the cylinders.

Pull lower and inspect water pump housing if good replace impeller. Do this only if compression and spark are good.

You have so many threads going its hard to follow along.

I think we need to regroup and go back to your original thread. Maybe get a mod to combine them so every one is on the same page.

No, charging fine. I'm trying to solve a mystery now. The other day ( different post) I finally, after many tries, had this engine running like a top. I had finally discovered at I was only running on five cylinders after it warmed up. Could not get on plane, or over 1750-1800 rpm. Swapped out offending power pack. Finally had it running like a scalded dog, WOT closing in on 60 mph in rough water. I made the turn to keep close to the trailer just in case... Heard the rpm reduce some (uncommanded) so I pulled it back. Engine died, and smoke started coming from the cowl. Took it off, and it looked and smelled like electrical components smoking on top of the engine. Trolled back to the trailer and went home. I DO SEE a couple spots on my stator, that are suspicious, but it checks ok on the ohm meter. One of the charge coils is right in the middle of the spec, and the other one is just 6 ohms out of spec high. Rectifier still seems to read properly, but when I removed it, I can't tell for sure that the water got up to it! I pulled the heads tonight to check for scoring, or signs of overheating. Honestly, the cylinders look amazing for a 30 year old motor. I know the pee hole is working, but I am ordering new head gaskets, and new water pump, cause then I'll know when they were changed last. 😀

I'm a little suspicious of the stator still......

Sorry guys, was investigating a few different things, so wasn't sure it was proper to combine, but ultimately I guess it is... My apologies

No, i am sorry, i thought this was all in search of the poor running and then the smoking stator.
