Sorry in advance for the 2 posting on this matter (previous 1 was about a week ago). So I have had some say it is the the input shaft seal that is leaking. Here is what it was doing. After 10 minutes of being in the water, I lost about 8 ounces of drive oil that I had just put in at home, then I noticed a rather large accumulationof water in the bilge to go along with it. I previously stated that a friend had replaced the upper bellows but did not replace the 2 o-rings closest to the head. I have looked in the service maunal and I do not see anything that corrulates to an "input shaft seal", but going through some "google" and yes I did say "google" searches I get pointed to an "oil seal", which doesn't matter cause I can't find that either. Should I just unhook the upper and lower unit and take it to the marina or is this a job that a engine builder as myself could do?

input seal would be the one at the stern end of the drive line, where it goes into the outdrive. That would account for the oil but what about the water?
It's a simple matter to pull the drive and see. $5 in gaskets. Do it in forward gear or you will break things trying to get it off.

Alright... I took that part number from that seal kit to Mercury Parts Express, typed in my serial number, and it appears to me that this is a job thats needs another o-ring that appears to be pretty big in size. Do they make a "gasket/seal kit" for the entire assembly? I already bought another "gasket/seal kit" from the marina and had it shipped to me for the upper to transom housing, as well as, a lower unit "gasket/seal kit" with the impellar. From what I am seeing is that the water IS entering the boat from the upper or lower drive or both. How hard is it to pull the driveline from the upper unit to perform this r&r without having any "special" tools or did I just answer that question by not having those "special" tools?

It's pretty intensive, and you'll need a press, a few drivers, and the big merc bearing retainer wrench. Not trying to dissuade you from doing it, but if not done right, it can be a mess real quick. Look at a service manual first, and see how you feel.

Well... I think you made it quite clear, I am taking the upper and lower unit to the marina for them to have a winter project. Any guesstimate on what to expect from this?
