Can some one tell me where to place the mickey mouse ears on the lower unit to start the engine when out of the water? There are only two places that I can see. The engine is a 40 horse Johnson?

Thanks

Kayaker175-----I too have a 40 hp Johnson and the
intake to the water pump is on the port side of the motor just above the cavitation plate---it has a screen over the openning. Hope this helps.

Meaux

Re: water ear placement

Meaux--

I have a 1966 Johnson 20 hp. The water intake is placed in such a way (in the front) that the earmuffs won't fit it. I have to pull the prop and place the lower unit in a 55 gallon drum. Will the earmuffs completely cover the intake?

Re: water ear placement

Jeaux

I tried to used the ear muffs on my 40 hp Johnson but as you mentioned, the muffs don't fit well over the water intake---I was thinking that I could force enough water through the water jacket to see it come out the "tell tale" but never did see the water come out----even while bumping the starter on the engine in short burts.
I'll try it either in the water or a barrel next.
Will keep you informed.

Meaux

Re: water ear placement

kayaker715
I am afraid you have got bad info here. The water intake is always below the cavation plate. Remember the cavation plate runs at or just below the water. The holes above the cavation plate are water output holes and on plane can be above the water. Hard to suck up water if holes are above the water. The input is first set of holes above the prop shaft and the muffs should fit fine. If you try and put them on the output holes they usually will not fit. I hope this is clear.

Kayaker

If and when you get the ear muffs to work on that 40 hp Johnson, let me know how you did it? :)

meaux2@yahoo.com

Thanks

Meaux
