I have a 1983 75 hp. evenrude. It dosent want to idle after it gets warmed up so I stuck a water muffler on it and started up. The problem seems to be that when running with water on the lower unit there is water coming out of several places (from a hole in front of the lower unit, seems like there is just too much water running all over the place. The small outlets that I think the warm water should be coming out of dosen't have hardly any and only when reved up. The pee hose has plenty of water coming out but it is always cold. I'm not sure if all of this is normal or not. Hope someone has some info to share. Thanks

Re: water everywhere

Welcome to iboats.
This is the wrong forum.
You need the Johnson/Evinrude repair forum where I will move it now.

Re: water everywhere

1. Running on muffs is worthless as a water pump check. You are forcing water through the pump and even a bad one will let water through.

2. The pee hole is ahead of most of the cooling system, so temp at that point is sort of worthless too. The water at that point hasn't gone through and done any cooling so of course it is not heated up yet.

3. Water squirting out everywhere while on muffs is normal. All those drain holes are there for a purpose.

4. Only way to tell how well it is cooling is to put it in the lake and run it. If it has been awhile since the water pump was serviced, it won't hurt to do that anyway.

5. Water may or it may not have anything at all to do with your rough idle. Impossible to tell from here. In addition to possible heating up, it could be leaking water into a cylinder.
