Water/Exaust Question

Pardon my ignorance but I'm new to boat ownership. After returning from a fishing trip and hooking up the muffs to the leg on my '98 Mercruiser 3.0, I've noticed there are two exit ports on the transom. The one on the starboard side expels water. The one on the port side seems to expel exhaust. Is this right? I'm asking because I've thought the water is suppose to expel from both ports and thought exhaust is to expel from the prop. My first thoughts is that maybe I have a clog somewhere. I haven't yet experienced problems with overheating. Thanks in advance.

Ayuh,... Those are the idle relief ports...
It's a common passage inside, 'n which 1 spouts whichever really don't matter...
The exhaust, 'n water mix at the end of the riser, well above those ports...
