Water Exit Hole

I have a '56 Scott Atwater 5hp motor that runs very well but I cannot be sure the water pump is working. I see no stream of water coming from anywhere. I'm told there should be a pinhole at the back, bottom of the cylinder head which would allow the water to shoot through a square hole in the engine cover. I've found the square hole but cannot find a hole anywhere. How can I be sure the water pump is working and where should the cooling water exit?

Thanks,
John

Re: Water Exit Hole

It's been many moons since I watched one of those things run, but isn't there an exhaust relief somewhere on the back of the midsection? Water should spray/mist out there if there is such a thing. Also, as I remember, there should be water coming out the bailer outlet. That is water diverted from the cooling pump so that the bailer impeller doesn't run dry.

Those pumps have a bad reputation. You need to have the motor as deep in the water as you can before starting it up. The pump runs dry till it lifts water up to it's level (the pump is behind the bailer fitting). If it doesn't prime immediatly, it runs dry too long and it's goodby impeller.

Thanks, F R,

I do have water coming from the bail-o-matic barbed port. There is a rubber cover that you can move to expose the barbed port and another outlet. Water does come out there. You say this indicates the bailer pump is not working? That would be ok, since I don't have the pick up puck.

No, I am saying the main pump is working--at least that far. There is a bleed hole between the two pumps to keep the bailer wet. Water would not be going through the bleed hole if the main pump is not getting it at least that far.

That does not say whether or not the bailer is working, only that the main pump is squirting water through it.

Nor does it say that the water is going from the main pump, through the powerhead. But it probably is. The pumps may be troublesom, but the rest of the motor is pretty reliable.

Ah...so if I don't want use the bailer (which I don't have), that's what the rubber boot cover is for? It is movable and will cover the barbed tube and the one next to it. This will keep water from coming out when the bailer is not connected and may then improve water flow through the power head? Bottom line is...I still want to see water coming from a pee hole somewhere!

Thanks again,

John
