Just bought a boat (16' smokercraft ) w/25HP Merc 2 stroke. Unlike my other boats, this boat has integral fuel tank (12Gal). One friend said I should install an inline fuel filter / water filter with replaceable element (bowl type $36.99 ). He says danger of water in fuel is much greater with integral fuel tank 'cause they never get cleaned or completely emptied out or rinsed out with solvent. What do you guys think ? Every other boat I've ever owned always had portable plastic fuel tanks that I could take out and carry around (6 gal variety).
The engine already has the small inline fuel filter, but I'm wondering if this is a worthwile addition to mount this special bowl seperator type filter.

Hey Clams,

Why would this motor be any different than any other, as far as water in the fuel being a problem? Curious...

Maybe a stupid way to do it, but I put on a gas/water filter on my '91 50 to clear out the water in the 22 gal. tank that had sat for 4 years before I bought it. The Merc dealer wanted $5.00 a gallon to drain the tank and flush out. I had just filled it not knowing I had a water problem, so it would have been over $100.

I had to empty the filter 3 times over a couple uses before I had all the water out. That was 3 years ago and no problems since. I'm a fan of gas/water filters.

Jerry

I hate fuel water seperators and those folks that use them and regularly maintain them. I mean it takes gravy money right out of my pocket. wish I had a franklin for every rebuild of an engine or carb due to water in the carbs, wait I did get a franklin or two. anyway I actually reccomend them and they can be purchased all over the place and are not hard to install.
