Hello,Everyone.I'm a bit curious on the vernatherm/relief valve/thermostat housing water flow. This is on a 1970 85 hp 'Rude. There is two outlets on the waterpump and two water pipes going up to powerhead. The way I understand it is the water flows up from pump into vernatherm housing,if vernatherm is closed water flows back to lower unit through poppet valve on other side of vernatherm housing? Is this correct? The starboard side of this engine seems warmer than the port side? I've verified my vernatherm is functioning,(pan of water,143 degrees) it just seems a little strange.Anyone care to explain the process? This is a great site,I appreciate the informative answers that alot of people so selflessly give.A good manual and this board keeps alot of us outboarders going. Thanks Everyone,C.C.

Re: water flow from pump V4 question??

According to my manual water flows from pump to the block and cylinder heads then to the t-stat housing. If the v-therm is closed ( not yet to operatimg temp) it flows thru the pressure relief(poppet) and back to the pump. After the v-therm opens the hot water is dumped thru the mid section around the exhaust tube to help cool it.

Hmm... maybe this is a common thing? Or normal? I just acquired a 1978 rude 85. My starboard side is running probably 50 degrees hotter than the port, judging just by touching the block.

I am at a loss to explain it so far, kinda worried about putting it on the water for the first time with the temperature differential. I am suspecting a stuck thermostat on mine.

Its designed to run same temp on both banks. When one is hoter than the other it is because water is not flowing equally thru both.

Blockage of some sort is takeing place. Either T..stats or crud.

But problem needs to be solved before going further.

Good luck!
