Water flow issue

I installed the new impeller cover, impeller liner and impeller coated in high Vis oil per the OMC manual. I had the muffs on and had my wife start it up (damn it sounds good) and after 10 seconds had her shut it down. No water out of the exhaust at prop. I pulled the t-stat housing and checked the stat in the kitchen, opened at 140 as it should.

I see from the manual that I should have flow out of the exhaust whether the stat is opened or closed. Water from inlet goes out to both manifolds and out to the exhaust. The circulating pump flows water through the engine when cold and pulls the cooler water in when the stat opens.

Any ideas on what type a problem that I am dealing with?

Re: Water flow issue

Do you have an OEM service manual? Using oil on an impeller can damage them. I would start by checking the impeller. If ok, you were lucky, use dish washing liquid to lube the impeller.

As far as circulation, the engine will fill up with water when started, but will not circulate in the engine until the thermostat opens, then the water circulates THROUGH the engine and then out the exhaust. There is water that goes through the exhaust anytime the engine is running.

One other note, your raw water pump will not suck water up from the muffs if there is an air leak in the housing.

Yep, the OMC King Cobra AMH manual. I scanned the two pages from the manual but I guess that the files were too large so I couldn't upload them. I'll pull the impeller before it gets dark. When you mention air leak in the housing, do you mean impeller housing? New o-ring and all.

EDIT: Impeller looks fine.

Great answer

Think you might explain what you found that caused the problem so others may learn from your experience?

Decided to check flow from point to point on the cooling system. It didn't take long. With impeller housing off, put water to the muffs. wasn't getting much water to the inlet port to the impeller. Took a pair of 10" throat vise grips to tighten up the muffs as the water pressure was spraying out of the muffs onto the ground. Water shot out of the impeller inlet port. Put impeller back on and pulled supply hose to t-stat housing. Started and it washed down the bilge.

Crappy, leaking muffs.

Sorry for the solved statement, was watching the race......

Re: Water flow issue

Water flows well into the manifolds but not happy with out flow. Pulling the manifolds this weekend for the shadetree line boring. Already checked flappers a couple of weeks ago.

A fair amount of scale chips came out of the exhaust manifolds, enough to restrict flow from getting into the water jackets in the riser elbows.

mzahn, Thanks for the update that is what I hope is going on with mine every time I drain the starboard side I have to run a wire up it to make it drain. So you got a good pile of stuff out of there?

Not a huge amount but enough to be unacceptable. After using a 3' piece of 1/2" all thread rod and flushing them out, I capped both ends of the supply tubes and filled with iron-out solution. I got alot more orange fluid out when rinsing after the chemical soak.

Not bad for 375 hours with a lack of maint.

Only once, just bought the boat last May and spent all summer getting it running. We like Temple Bar. We've rented and borrowed and paying the owners of those boats has been cheaper than owning so far.:D
