I'd like to be sure that my 4.3 is getting adequate water flow while on muffs. Is there better way other than muffs?

Not practically...You can pull the drive off and feed a hose into the water intake...but there's no need. So long as your impeller is in good condition an is drawing water it's fine. Millions of boats have run on them without issue.

muffs are fine for idle speed and up to about 1000 rpm. just as long as you don't have a low water pressure situation in your domestic water supply.

Cut a 50gall drum in half, slip it under the drive and fill it with water... That's the way we did it before they invented muffs....

Chris.

back then the outdrive allowed for the water to be high enough to self prime. not sure that is still the case with todays drives

A marina near me put in a small pond in their yard with a ramp to back the boat down. The pond is about 10'x30'. But that was about 20 years ago at a cost in the 10's of thousands of dollars. Worth it for him at the time since he was using it daily and would rent out time to DIYers. I personally would rather use muffs.

When I had a boat shop we had a 400 gal test tank built. It was designed to allow big outboards and stern drives to be run under load. A stern drive will run quite happily if the starting water level is just up to the bottom of the pump, even the gen IIs. When we needed to empty the tank, we'd put a big block bravo drive in. Drop the hammer hard and the tank was empty in about 4 seconds!
