Water Flow Question

Hello All, I'm replacing the thermostat and impeller on my 1966 Chrysler/Seaking outboard and I'm a little confused about the water flow in my engine. I know the water is picked up at the impeller then, as best as I can tell, it's forced into the exhaust housing? From there, it travels through a plastic hose to the T/stat, where it either enters the head, depending on engine temp, or exits out the down the exhaust port on the middle of the engine leg. If the T/Stat is open, doesn't that exhaust exit on the 2 small exhaust ports on the lower unit? When the T/Stat is open should some water still exit the mid engine exhaust port? I hope that makes sense. Thanks in advance.

Exhaust will come out the snout and some will come out the holes in the back.Excess water/exhaust will come out the holes in the mid section.along with the exhaust snout.

You are essentially correct in your water flow. It enters the block through the bottom and flows first around the exhaust chest. It then flows around the cylinders. If the thermostat is closed, it will not flow down the head but if it is open, water flows dowm the head and out a port on the bottom into the midleg.

What you call the two small exhaust ports is actually the idle relief vent(s). Water exits them all the time and usually in a substantial amount. Water also travels down the leg interior and exits through the exhaust snout.

Look closely at the attached photos and you will see the steady stream of water exiting the idle relief at speed.

Thanks for the reply guys. I have a better understanding of it now. I've been reading a lot about "tell tale" applications. My motor doesn't have a bolt or a screw on the top of the head near the T/stat. It has, what appears to be a cap, in place of a bolt. I'm not real excited about drilling into my motor so, what do you think about putting a "T" fitting into that plastic hose coming off the Exhaust manifold? I would make sure the water going out to the tell tale would be reduced to a very small stream so I wouldn't rob any water to the Head. What do you think?

Wickware, do you think I should drill/tap a hole in the head of my motor for the tell tale? Mine doesn't have a bolt/screw on the T/stat housing, it's seems to be a plug. I can get a pic. if necessary. What do you think about going off that tube coming off the exhaust housing?

A photo would certainly help, but if your head is the one that has a simple tube running down next to the sparkplugs, then yes, it has a welsh plug in the top. This plug (cap) is thin aluminum and can not be tapped. If this is the case, then again, yes, a tee in the plastic line would be easiest but don't use too large a pisser hose or not enough water will get to the head.

[/URL][/IMG]Frank and wickware, thanks a lot! Here's a photo of my engine/project. Frank, I'm making sure the "pisser hole" is as small as possible. Also, my parts motor had the controls and ignition switch. It had the overheat buzzer and I tested it today and it buzzed. Tomorrow, I'll hook that up. Now if we could get some warm weather in the Pacific Northwest I'll take it out for a test run.
