Water/ Fuel filter needed?

I was told by a mechanic that fixed my 25hp Johnson that he would not run my motor because I had water in my fuel tank. I went and got another tank and mixed with oil and had him run it. I went and bought a new 6gal tank and a water fuel filter. I have not seen this on many small boats, is this really necessary before I try to install it on both my jon boat and the 17ft bowrider? Thanks.

Fuel/water seperators are probably the best preventive maintenance items so far. With the fuel stabilizers like Seafoam and Stabil Marine, most fuel/water/ethanol problems are eliminated. Install one on each transom and carry spare cartridges in boat. Good Luck!

Thanks guys, will do. I assume E10 is 10% ethanol.

The only thing you can assume about E10 fuel is that it has at least 10% ethanol. The pump will say something like "10% or less" or "up to 10%" but don't be surprised if it's actually more.
