Water/fuel separating funnel?

I purchased a water separating funnel from West Marine, model WMF3C. It is supposed to filter water and dirt out of your tank when pumping from unknown quality sources, such as outside the US.

I had gotten some water in my fuel tank. I was under the assumption that I could pump out the tank through this filter that should remove the water. I pump the first 5 gallons out, through the filter and then put into my old jeep. Well this didn't work. The jeep stalled, obviously due to water. Can someone give me some input on why this didn't work? If the funnel is supposed to filter water, why didn't it filter the water from my tank? Thanks

Re: Water/fuel separating funnel?

That seems to be alot of water so I would determine how that much water got into the fuel tank. AS far as the fileter, i dont have any experience but some of those guys at west marine are pretty knowledgeable. Start there for technical explanations on the filter.

Ayuh,... Is this a Filter, or a Funnel,..??

A water seperating FILTER can only hold so much Water...
When it's FULL, the water passes, as it seperates by gravity, not the filter element....

Never heard of a Funnel with that capability...

Perhaps your boat gas had additives in it which allowed the water to pass through the filter screen. Could be an ethanol thing. Just a guess. I have't had the need to use mine for awhile.

That's a new one on me, but if it works seems like a good idea....never seen one!

Is this a built-in tank? How did you pump the gas out?

You likely have a bad case of ethanol phase separation in your tank. The water is heavier and thus settles to the bottom of the tank. If you are using the gas line to siphon from, it picks up fuel from the bottom of the tank. That 5 gallons of gas could have been 99% water. That's what stalled the jeep. Google ethanol phase separation for more info.

I recommend you pump everything out of that tank and dispose of it. It's not worth the aggravation. The water can get trapped in the carbs of older engines producing a low-power situation. You might have to go to a Marina.

Racor sells a nice Fuel Filter Water Separator. If you're using an outboard you could buy something like the Racor 660R-RAC-02. It has a clear bowl at the bottom you can see the separation. The bowl has a drain at the bottom so you can dump the separated water.

Good Luck.

Some additives will allow water to pass thru the screen.
The finer the screen mesh the better it will filter out water and other junk.
But ethanol and methanol has been used for years to "remove" water from gas.
Such as HEET.
It does not remove anything. It merely disperses the water throughout the gasoline enough that the engine will still run un-noticably rough, hopefully, most of the time.

There is a sreen in the funnel.
Drip a drop of water on it and it should not pass thru the screen.
If it does, it is a cheapo funnel.
