I have a 1970 135 horse power mercury outboard and i can"t keep the oil in the bottom end from getting milky, I have replaced all the seals in the bottom end everywhere including the shift lever seals,the seal under the water pump housing is suppose to be a double seal,i was told that mercury doesn"t make them any more,it is suppose to be a back to back seal, one to keep water out one to keep oil and in. Do i put two seals in there and reverse them? is there room to put them in there? thankyou

Willy,<br /><br />The most common place for water intrusion is the fill/drain plug seals. Very few people replace them.

Thankyou for your reply --djohns19--i appreciate it, i have replaced the the fill and drain seals thinking that might be it, but still getting milky oil in the bottom end,if i could get the double seal that is suppose to be under the impeller housing that might be the problem. Do you know where i could get such a seal for a 1970 -135 horse mercury outboard? I have tried for 5 years now and can"t seem to locate one

You'll have to pressure/vacuum test the unit to see where it's leaking for sure. <br /><br />The tools are available here, But I've just used a old piece of rubber valvestem turn from a bicycle tube and ground slightly tapered, screwqed into the drain hole, along with a bike pump for pressure test. And the fitting with my mityvac tool for vacuum test.<br /><br />Perhaps for the seal check with any major bearing and seals store located in the yellow pages. They do make a sleeve that can be glued over a worn shaft to make it almost better than new.

Thank you for the good idea of using a rubber valve stem for a fitting to use as a pressure test<br /> and that sleeve mabe the answer if i can find one in canada , I tried once <br /> thanks again yepblaze
