Water Heater Life

I have a 6 gal Seaward water heater, that uses either shore power or engine coolant water to heat water.
My engine is raw water (saltwater) cooled, and I was wondering how long these types of water heaters last.
Has anyone had the heat exchanger (raw water) portion of this type of heater rust-out?
Mine is from 2000.

Wow, and you have saltwater running through the water heater's heat exchanger?

Well, I got to answer my own question. Today, I discovered that the aluminum nipples that the raw water hoses clamp to (from engine) are completely corroded. Therefore, my water heater lasted 12 seasons.

My 270 Sea Ray is a 2001 which we bought it in September 2010 and the water heater had also failed at both the connectors when we first looked at the boat. $300 to replace with a brand new one; the seller paid for a new one and I installed it.
