water impeller change-out question

I've got the old '66 110 running finally. However, I had a service guy tell me I needed to change the water impeller badly. He claims it needs to be done every 3 years (& I'm guessing the orginal '65 impeller is on there).<br />The engine runs fine, doesn't overheat & I get a solid stream out the pee-hole & it spits even more out of the secondary exhaust port under the motor.<br />The guy who told me knows what he's talking about, but I don't wanna mess up something if it's working fine. Is this really necessary? Thanks...

"Is this really necessary?" <br />YES!<br />It is a very simple task and will take even the worst lefty only a half an hour or so to change as long as nothing is corroded <br />Use the search button above to find detailed instructions on the procedure...<br />Jon

Like yours, I have heard of lots of cases of impellers still working after MANY years of service. Yours may continue to work fine for many more years to come or it may fail tomorrow. Thats the nature of the beast. If it does fail it can result in a very expensive repair bill. What you need to determine is, is it worth the risk of trying to dissassemble a very old motor and possibly breaking things to fix something that still works OK. Is this motor new to you ? Why do you think the original impeller is still in use ?

If you don't KNOW when the impeller was installed - CHANGE IT.<br /><br />It's a lot harder to take apart a powerhead on an old motor than it is to drop a lower unit. <br /><br />-W

yep, looking here the lower unit looks like it's gonna be a bear to remove. I have no idea what holds it on looking at it.<br />To answer the question, it may have been changed at some point, but both my great-grandfather & my dad are notoriously bad of taking care of their stuff. This boat sat in the woods for 10 years before I hauled it out & started refurbishing...that's why I'm guessing it hasn't been changed for at least 10!
