Water impeller location?

just like the topic states: where is the impeller? i have an I/O merc 120. is it in the water pump? if so, im assuming the water pump is on the engine?

reason im asking is that im concerned that its about shot. havent taken the boat out yet because of a cracked block but im going out soon but last year i remember the engine temp climbing a little too high after going a little while at WOT. i suspect impeller because i ran the boat a few times out of the water (i didn't know any better at the time). sometimes only a few seconds, and once or twice a minute or 2.

thanks for the help.

The water circulating pump is on the front of the engine. The impeller water pump is in the outdrive..

Need to know the year and model of what drive it is..

hmmm... no idea. i am nowhere near it right now. all i know is that its a 1980 galaxy with a mercruiser 120 engine.

i definitely dont know how to drop the outdrive so i will just hafta live with it for now. its not too bad as long as i dont go full speed for long periods. thanks for the response.

Dude, you already have the symptoms of a failing impeller. If the impeller comes apart, which they do with age, the pieces go on thru and jam up the rest of the cooling plumbing and you will have to do way more work that what replacing it now adds up to.

I'm just sayin' ;)

Figure it out and replace it before you do some real damage!!!

my 2 cents...

Re: Water impeller location?

How involved is replacing the impeller? just drop the lower gear case like an outboard?

I would like to replace mine as it is working, but the boat is new to me and while I have all the maint records, this is a vulnerable enough area to go ahead and change it out in-order to know the condition.

If you are going to do your own maintenace, GET THE MANUAL!!! And no, you can not continue to operate the engine with a bad raw water feed, unless you feel like buying a new engine in a very short time.

uh, did not state that I was running it with a bad raw water feed, and in fact I have ordered the manual, it was not a very complicated question, sorry

Re: Water impeller location?

i know for a fact that i have water circulating around the engine but i dont know if its as much as it should. the reason i kno is because i cracked the block over the winter and when i ran it, water leaked all over the place. as long as i dont run the engine too hot, i don't see how i could damage it. i can cruise at half speed all day long but its just when i go full speed for a long time.

for all i know, i could just have a bad temp gauge or something, i dunno. im still putting the final touches on getting it running from the cracked block incident so i am anxious to get on the lake (its halfway thru the season already!) and i really dont know how to drop the outdrive and put it back together nor do i have the tools to do so.

i think im just gonna try to baby it until the end of the season and i can fix it over the winter. if i break something, oh well, what else is new?

I am confused why you even asked about it then....

May all your block cracks be on the outside and your JB weld be strong.

umm, your problem is much bigger than a bad impeller, you have an externally cracked block from i'm assuming not winterizing properly. the block is more than likely cracked internally too. you should fix ALL the problems before boating again

im already on top of the cracked block issue, i got a new block in there already and im getting it ready to go back on the water... i was just asking where the impeller was because i suspected it to be going bad. from what im assuming its going to be a little too in-depth for me to change so i am just going to push it thru this season and change it afterwards. i really want to do it now but the season will be over by the time i get all this stuff fixed.

Re: Water impeller location?

As stated above , it sounds like your impeller is on it's way out. It's an easy fix to drop the lower half and change the impeller. It only takes about an hour and does not require any special tools. You just replaced a cracked block and if the impeller is bad you may be doing it again. They fail fast!! I would not even run it in the driveway until I checked that impeller and housing. Up top in the adults only section you will find everything you need to get it out on the water.

Ayuh,... It really appears that you lack the understanding of the raw waterpump Impeller....

You just changed the motor block,...
You'll only get 1 boating trip out of it if you Don't fix the Raw Waterpump....

It's a 1/2 hour job for Me,... It'll take you maybe an Hour or so....
While you have the lower unit Off,(yea, it's Easy, no Special tools required)....
Backflush all the broken pieces of Impeller out by putting a garden hose into the In-coming waterline from the outdrive, At the T-Stat Housing....
You'd also better order the Complete pump Kit, with the housings,...
I'm Sure your's are Smoked,+ Burnt from running it without Water....
You also probably Fried the exhaust shutters,+ bellows as well...

Otherwise,... Kiss the investment just made in that motor Good Bye......

Ayuh,.... By clicking on the Merc. I/O Parts button at the top of this page,+ following along through to the Merc. cooling system parts to the MR/Alpha waterpump Kits,...
You should end up Here... 18-3320
Provided of course everything is original,... That should be the 1...
As I don't think your's is quite Old enough to be a Model 1 drive..
