I have a 1965 9.8 mercury model 110 motor

I put a new impeller in the motor. It is not peeing. I used a water hose and checked there is no blockage in the lines. When I run the motor there is very little water coming out of the pee hole but there is a lot of air coming out of the hole motor was starting to get hot what do I do next?

The motor has not been started or used for at least 8 years. It started and runs good.

Is there water coming out of the water exhaust/letout at the bottom of the motor? There is a chance that your input line grommet in the waterpump housing is not properly seated onto the water input line.

Also, are you absolutely sure that you put the impeller key in when you installed the motor? If so I almost guarantee you have a bed grommet in the waterpump base.

Re: water impeller no water

i checked the impeller it turned with the drive shaft when i turned the drive shaft with my hand. The key did not come out of the shaft when i took the old impeller out. Can i just take a water hose and put water down from the pee hole to see if it comes out the center of the prop? How do I check the input line grommet to see if it is properly seated onto the water inlet line? how do i check the grommet in the water pump base? there was a lot of air coming out of the peephole , were is the air coming from? i do not like the idea of take it apart for the second time, it took me forever getting it back together. if it needs to come apart so be, it will come apart.

Re: water impeller no water

when my waterpump blew on my 4.5 merc (1977) it blew air out of the peehole. So I am sure that you do not have a good seal with the waterpump base and the water input line. Did you change the grommet? Sometimes pieces of the old waterpump become dislodged and then relodged in other places when the motor is flowing water well again. You will need to pull down the L/U, flush the system once more, check or change the grommet. There is a little piece of rubber that protrudes out of the grommet that must be seated in the housing, if it is not, it will NOT by any means have a tight water seal. This is truly what I believe you are experiencing. Only other thing you could have done was miss the waterinput line entirely with the waterpump base. Teardown and reinstallation is indicated.

Re: water impeller no water

Top compression was 105 psi
Bottom compression was 115 psi
I put water down from the pee hole with a water hose and spout so I could get some good pressure.
The water came out the center of the prop tried to put water from the bottom up it would not come out the peephole.
There is a flush plug on the motor I put water from there down there was some gray and white materal that came out the bottom a little smaller than sand. I then took the hose and put water from the intake at the bottom like you said the water came out of the water flush hole.
I put the flush plug in and then I put water into the intake the water DID NOT COME OUT of the pee hole. Is it plugged up at the top of the motor? What is next? . i did not change the grommet may need to get one. i may have bolted the water pump cover on the wrong way, could that make a difference. were is the grommet? i did not take the hoseing out it was hooked to the copper inlet tube. to put the grommet in do i have to take the impeller out of the hoseing or just rase up the hoseing i would think i would not be able to reuse the inpeller
I would like to thank you for your help pete

Sure buddy, not prob. When I get home I can take some pics of my waterpump. You do not need to open the pump housing to change out the grommet. It is right in the top of the pump output tube, where the copper line goes into. If it is seated properly you should not have any issues, and may not need to change it, but I bet it is all bunched up in there, or maybe has a hole in it.

Next, does your motor have a thermostat? If it does then that would explain the "blockage" that you are experiencing. When the thermostat is not hot, it will not flow water.

Re: water impeller no water

Did you use the "helper" tube that is designed to force the water input line into the waterpump housing? If not it is nearly impossible to get them to line up along with the driveshaft, shiftshaft, and studs. These L/U's are among some of the hardest to get back on in my opinion.

I also made a cool little adapter that made the water hose fit the water input line precisely so that I could get really good water pressure up the tube. That will help to flush out the system. Is this a salt water motor or fresh? All of my salties needed a full gasket job and thorough waterpassage cleaning.

Pete
i was told the motor does not have a thermostat. i used the helper tube and looked to make sure the copper tube that comes down from the block was in the helper.

i have to learn on the hardest L.O.L. it took me 2 hrs To get the lower unit on. The motor is used in fresh water..Is the grommet on the top part of the housing (go's under the tube guide) or is it on the lower side were the 3 inch tube comes in from the water inlet? When i first started this job i tried to take the small copper inlet tube out could not figure out how to get it out without bending the tube.
How big of a job is it for a thorough water passage cleaning? i think the motor is plugged at the top when I use a water hose at the inlet, water will come out of the water flush hole does not come out of the peephole, when i put the flush plug back in water does not come out the pee hole. the water flush hole is at the top. The motor has not been used in 10 years.

With the lower unit off, slide your garden hose up over the copper water transfer tube and turn the water on, does the water now flow out the 'P' tube?

Re: water impeller no water

Sorry for the delayed response. I had some septic tank issues to deal with all day today..... Lovely. Anyway, chances are that you had some of the impeller get stuck in there as it slowly dissolved to its final demise. Try and take the hose off of the peehole attachment. A lot of times this is where the blockage can be. It is quite a job to clean out all the waterpassages (for some) especially if you are just looking to get on the water and not have to spend hours and cash on this motor. I just did this to my Johnson 4hp and it took about 2 or 3 days and $60 in parts, not to mention I snapped a head bolt (because I wanted to clean the passages behind the head gasket. Best bet at this point is to make a high powered flush device like mine(below) and bring the motor and hose downhill from the spigot. This will give you all the pressure that you can get.
P2240992.jpg

Here is where the grommet sets, and in mine (1977 4.5hp Merc) the grommet is all the way at the bottom.
P2240991.jpg

Last but not least, there is a little nipple on the grommet, that holds it in place. If it is not seated correctly with this particular waterpumpbase it WILL NOT GIVE YOU GOOD PRESSURE!!

Hope this helps!!

Re: water impeller no water

I like your water hose hook up . I will make up one and try it first. I plan on ordering a grommet and installing it. I read on here were some one hooked a electric drill to the drive shaft then put the L/U in water to see if it would pump , do you think this is a good idea? in the picture you will see a 1/8 ?set screw on the top of the motot do you think that could be a passage way into the water chamber ? There is a small plate on the side of motor would that go into the water chamber ? The side of the motor were the wire?s are there is a large plate what is behind it? What would happen if I removed these pieces? Would I have to buy new gaskets to reinstall the plates it may be hard to get the gaskets(this is going to be by last resort). The water flush plugs is on the side were the small metal plate is. The flush plug is on the underside of the case.
You said to take the hose off the pee hole I can not get to it there is a silver metal plate that covers over it there is not any water lines that are exposed. The only way would be to remove the motor from the case.
I am sanding and painting the motor that is why it look?s like this .

I cannot think you enough for helping me, has you can tell I do not known very much about working on boat motors.
The picture are in the next post.

Looks real similar to mine. That plate on the side is an exhaust plate. You can see some of the water passage, as well as the pistons/rings from the side. You will need to change the gasket there, and really, if you cant flow water with the flush hose, then you are going to need to remove the entire powerhead and the head, exhaust housing, all of that. That is why we need to flush the pieces of impeller out before going further. It is worth a shot! By the way, the grommet that you have in the base looks okay to me, although it may not seat tightly anymore, hard to tell by looking.

Re: water impeller no water

If broken impellar pieces is the problem, the pieces should be flushed out backwards. Take the lower unit off and blow compressed air into the p hole at the top of the motor. The pieces should dislodge and come out of the copper inlet tube. I would first check for dirt dobbers nest in the p hole. Stick a clothes hanger up the hole a few inches and see if you knock anything loose. Then blow air from the p hole to the flush plug and feel for the air. Take the l/u off and try to dislodge anything in there.

Re: water impeller no water

Hey Pete, I have a question for you now. The last time that I pulled my L/U it was stuck and I had to use a come along to pull the unit off. I feel like I may have bent one of my shafts. Anyway, since you are currently working on yours, when you last installed your lower unit did it feel like the driveshaft or the shift shaft went into place first? Or did they go into place at the exact same time? I am having trouble getting mine back on there and no one on here seems to have any good answers for me.

Re: water impeller no water

The drive shaft started in first. When I looked up into the upper unit with a flashlight there was a sleeve that the shift shaft went into there is VERY LITTLE ROOM for it to go in . it took me over an hr to get the shift shaft to line up with the sleeve. I took it in and out a dozen times. When it all lined up right it was has easy as pie to go together (it just slid all the way in. The sleeve would move into a position that the shift shaft would not slide into, I took a long screwdriver and moved the sleeve over . I had to lay the motor in a good position so gravity would hold the sleeve down. It did feel like it was tight and hard to pull back if it was not in the sleeve.

Good luck I have had it in and out twice just has hard the second time as the first.

Re: water impeller no water

Hahaha, thanks for the info bro. Good to hear that the driveshaft is the first to go in, now I have a great starting point. Sounds like I may want to give it a try upside down. I'm with you man, I have done several of these smaller Mercs and it just seems like the shift system works smooth as glass, but they are definitely a pain to get in sometimes. My 65hp Merc's L/U was a TON easier to line up then these guys.

So how is the project going along? Did you free up your blockage yet?

Re: water impeller no water

I dropped the lower unit and put a 1/2 drill on the shaft and submerged it in water it pumps water up the guide tube. I used a water hose and shoot water up the 3/8” copper pipe at first no water but then there was some water came out the pee hole. I did see a stream of water that looks like it is coming out beside one of the bolts that mounts the motor to the case, frame or what ever it is called? What is it called. I am going to take the motor to a friend that has a compressor and shoot air up the pipe to see if it is leaking. I tried to tighten the nut did not help. I would think if it is leaking air that is why the pee hole had a lot of air coming out of it.
To answer your question yes the peephole is open now.

If you turn your motor upside down and look inside were the shift shaft go’s you should be able to see the end of the sleeve that I was talking about. to get the lower unit to go all the way i had to turn the flywheel just a little.

AHA!! That is where the powerhead meets the lower cowl. Check it out. So when I did a gasket job and did not seal it very well, the motor ran like CRAP!! It was hard to start and hard to keep running. It sounds like you have a leak at that gasket. If you remove the powerhead to change that gasket, you can have access to the water passage ways. Anyway you can get me a pic?
