I've got a 98 Ebbtide. Its has a 3.0GS I/O....I guess. I'm new to the boating world so I need some guidance. I bought the boat from my father in-law at a great price because of an engine problem. To make a long story short it runs great as long as we are on the move. If we stop the boat to go swimming we have to leave it running. If we turn the engine off while in the water it fills all 4 cylinders with water and thats when the fun ends. I pulled the exhaust manifold off and cant see anything visibly wrong. Im pretty sure someone out there knows more than me about this and what could be causing this problem. I need some pointers. Please help.

Just finished fixing my 5.7l gl Volvo after ingesting water in all 8 cyl.
Surely some of the pros will chime in but my issue was because of the exhaust riser to manifold gasket was blown allowing water back into block. Scared the heck outta me. I pulled all 8 plugs turned over for about three min to get all water out put liquid wrenc in cyl to inhibit rust then replaced all gaskets, started motor without water as directed to burn all water and oil out, then replaced impellor reassembled all after testing manifold and riser for leaks. She runs great again. watch out for rust in the cylinders though. we scoped the motor to see how bad the rust was. it only hadf water in it for 1 week so my issue was not that bad. also change oil. could have water in it.

I did notice that the gasket looked like it was replaced at some point and some type of adhesive silicone was used in conjunction with the the new gasket. What i dont understand is how water would get into the cylinders if there is a drainage hole in the intake/exhaust manifold? Thanks for the reply. Ill definitely replace that gasket though.

Check the flapper valves after the exhaust manifold we replaced the engine in our boat because we thought it had a cracked block but after the new engine got installed we still had the problem. Then we put the new flapper valves in it solved the problem

If the riser gasket had sillycone on it, then you can bet money that is where your water came from. The 98 model doesn't have flappers either. Volvo discontinued them in 96.
When you pull the riser, make sure the metal surfaces are clean flat and about a 1/4" wide, and use an OEM gasket.

Thanks don. I tried finding flappers and had no luck. Now I know why.

So here we go. Replaced the riser gasket and the manifold gasket. Starts up great,runs fine but when I turn it off im still getting water in the cylinders. Does anyone have a diagram on the water circulation for this engine? it a 98 GM 3.0 with a volvo penta.

Huge crack in the manifold! Pulled everything apart again. Rigged a garden hose and plug. Watched the water pour in through a crack in the exhaust port. I've never been so excited to see that happen.
