Re: Water in all four port side cylinders and oil

Rj,

The flappers are missing on both exhaust outlets... (never had them) I did run a garden hose thru the port side outlet and found no blockage. I did not check the flapper on the outdrive(not sure where it is). The boat is in the water/slip. The marina said they would put me on a three week list, just to look at the boat. I took things into my own hands. I'm lost........................

Thanks,

Joe

Re: Water in all four port side cylinders and oil

Hi All. I really need some help. I got a call today from the machine shop and he found no cracks in the heads or any warping. However, he did note that corrosion has widened the water ports, which are getting close to the cylinders. His concern was that planing the heads, because of the angle of the port, would make the water ports even closer. He suggested new heads. (Not sure what this should cost - any ideas?) I also left him the old head gaskets and he found no signs of breakout or leakage. So, I'm still unsure where this water came from. Recap - I've replaced manifolds and risers with original Merc parts, checked for blockage through the Y pipes, by running a garden hose through them, water flowed out the prop smoothly, Wasted my time changing the intake manifold gaskets to then pulling everything back apart to remove the heads. Heads checked out ok, have no cracks in the block or cylinder walls. Does anyone have any idea what to do? I'm afraid to put this motor back together to find the same problem. PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks, Joe

Is this engine FWC'd? .......and if so are the manifolds FWC'd?

I had a problem this year when I used the wrong gakets between the manifolds/risers.........I didn't get water in the cylinders but it was real close.....if i didn't catch it when i did

Tony,

Thanks... Its raw water. The gaskets are restricted. they are open on the sides(right & left) and has small holes on opposite ends.

I did not put the motor back together yet. I want to find the problem first. I'm bringing the intake to the machine shop in the morning. The shop owner wants to check that too.

Re: Water in all four port side cylinders and oil

Hey, I just wanted to give you guys an update...the machine shop found a cracked head, it was leaking from the casting seam that split apart, they found that unusual. I bought two remanufactured heads, all new marine gaskets and spark plugs and timed the motor. My question now is: I have a very slight skip or rather more of a pulsing idle. I'm assuming the problem is my four barrell quadrojet and am not sure of what procedures to take. I've also noticed that when I spray carb cleaner into to carburator, the idle picks up or if I cover the carburator with my hand. I seem to remember, in the past, when spraying carburator cleaner the motor wanted to stall, not speed up. Other than that, everything else seems fine. Any suggestions or ideas? I'm almost there! Thank you all for your help!
