Water In Cylinder and Low Compression

'84 OMC Sea Drive 1.6 L (I know, a Sea Drive) with approx 40 hrs on rebuild (purchased boat with 10 hrs on rebuild).

Boat is currently in the water (and intended to be all season).

Found motor running on three cylinders via plug wire test (no change in mtr when plug wire pulled off). Verified spark and then pulled plug and found it to be clean, verified fluid to be water not fuel. Not sure of cylinder number (left manual on boat) but it's the lower cylinder on port side, is this the infamous #4?.

Checked compression on "wet" cylinder and found it to be low, 20 psi at best, other cylinders between 120-130.

My questions is, should I try to replace head gasket (and or water cover gasket?) while boat is in the water, which I think is do-able, or am I looking at a more extensive rebuild?

After all the "fun" I've had this year with the boat, I'm ready to pull the plug and watch her go!

Thanks for any feedback

Howdy, RWood.

Working on the powerhead while the boat is in the water sounds to me like it will offer more problems than it would avoid.

Good luck. :)

Re: Water In Cylinder and Low Compression

I thought if the head gasket were the culprit it would be worth a shot?

Anything more and I'll plan to pull it.

I don't have a trailer and would need the marina to sling me out (for a fee of course).

What are the odds the gasket will solve my woes? The motor does have relatively low hours on the rebuild.

Please forward your opinion.
